Things to Remove from your CV in 2026

1. Career Objective: Avoid starting your CV with a generic career objective that focuses on what you seek rather than highlighting your value to the role. You can include an objective if you are doing a career pivot or if you are a fresh graduate.

2. Personal Information: Omit details like home address, ID number, dependents, health info, date of birth, marital status, and religion. Adding this information on a CV may pose a concern for discrimination during the recruitment process

3. Photo: Unless appearance is crucial for the job like the hospitality industry, exclude photos to prevent bias and keep the focus on your skills and experience. Some countries may require photos so you need to also do your research.

4. Additional Documents: Don't combine certificates, ID copies, etc., with your CV. Keep your CV as a standalone file. Combining the documents may disadvantage you especially in this era of using bots during initial screening.

5. Buzzwords: Steer clear of overused terms like "hard-working" and "motivated" to avoid blending in with other candidates. Instead include action verbs that tallies with the impact you want to bring out on your CV.

6. Graphics: This may make your CV clumsy or too beautiful but lacking proper value based content. Also some ATS systems may struggle with graphics, so skip logos, charts, and tables that could hinder initial scanning.

7. Unnecessary Fluff: Remove cover pages, titles like "Curriculum Vitae of...", and anything that doesn't contribute to a concise, impactful CV. Remember a Recruiter has 6 six to skim through your CV in order to make a decision so you need to make it short and straight to the point.

8. Long Paragraphs: Break information into bullet points for readability. Keep introductory summaries and responsibilities brief. Also, don’t make the bullets too long.

9. Life Story: Your CV isn't a Wikipedia page. Focus on a clear structure and a succinct Unique Value Proposition, resembling a website's landing page.

10. Work Email Address: Using your current employer's email is unprofessional. Opt for a personal email to maintain a polished image.

I want to share with you the right technique when answering the question "What are your salary expectations?"

Tips

• Do market research first: Make sure you know the average salary for the same position and location.

• Give a salary range: Give a reasonable salary range based on your experience and qualifications.

• Show your flexibility: Mention to the interviewer that you are open to discussing so that it suits the company's policies and the scope of the job.

✅ Example Answer 1 (General):

"Based on my research and understanding of the role, I believe a salary range between KES.50,000 and KES.65,000 would be appropriate, given my two years of experience in digital marketing and the skills I bring to the table. However, I’m open to discussion and would like to focus on finding a package that’s fair for both of us."

✅ Sample Answer 2 (Experienced Professional):
"Considering my five years of experience in software development and my track record of delivering projects that improved operational efficiency, I'm seeking a salary in the range of KES.70,000 and KES.85,000. That said, I'm open to discussing the details and understanding more about the company's budget for this role."

✅ Sample Answer 3 (Entry Level):
"As a fresh graduate with a degree in Accounting and an internship experience in a multinational company, I'm looking at a starting salary in the range of KES.30,000 and KES.40,000. I'm flexible and willing to consider the overall benefits and opportunities for growth within the company."

Don'ts

❌ “My current salary is KES 50,000 ”

Never disclose your current salary because it will kill your chances of future negotiation.

Say this instead:

✅ “I’d prefer not to disclose my current salary. Would you be able to share with me the salary range for this type of role?”

❌ “I’m looking for KES 100,000 if that would be ok?”

Asking for validation makes you sound unsure of yourself and undermines your credibility.

Say this instead:

✅ "Based on my market research and expertise, I’m looking for something between KES 70,000 - KES. 100,000."

❌ “I need more to cover my expenses”

Bringing personal details like this into a negotiation is oversharing and demonstrates a lack of professional boundaries.

Say this instead:

✅ "With my 8 years’ experience and skills in Accounting, I was aiming for KES.80,000. Is there anything we can do to get closer to that number?”

❌"This salary is too small to pay my rent, fair ticket, and sustain my life."

Avoid discussing personal expenses as they can make the negotiation seem self-centered rather than value-driven.

Say this instead:

✅ "I've reviewed the compensation, and considering the scope and responsibilities of the position, along with industry standards, a salary of KES 95,000 would better align with my professional qualifications and the value I anticipate bringing to the team."

❌"If I knew this was your offer, I wouldn't have wasted my time coming."

This statement can come off as disrespectful and may burn bridges.

Say this instead:

✅ "I appreciate your offer, though it's quite different from what I was expecting based on the role's requirements and industry norms. Can we discuss adjustments to the compensation package that reflect the complexity and demands of this position?"

❌"The salary is too little for the roles I will be doing."

Although it's important to negotiate based on role responsibilities, phrasing matters to maintain a constructive tone.

Say this instead:

✅ "Given the responsibilities outlined for this role and my professional expertise, I believe a compensation package closer to KES 100,000 would be more commensurate with the demands of the position. Let’s explore how we can make this offer work for both of us."

❌ “Can we wrap this up quickly? I have another offer waiting.”

Rushing a negotiation can signal desperation and may reduce your bargaining power.

Say this instead:

✅ "I'm currently exploring a few opportunities, but I'm particularly interested in the role your company is offering. Can we discuss the compensation package that would make this a perfect fit for me?"

❌ “Is that the best you can do?”

Challenging an offer in this way can seem confrontational and may put the employer on the defensive.

Say this instead:

✅ "I appreciate your offer. Based on my experience and the industry standard for this role, I was anticipating a slightly higher range. Could we explore the possibility of a salary closer to KES 90,000?"

❌ “Sorry, but I really need more money.”

Apologizing in your negotiation makes your request seem like an imposition rather than a professional requirement.

Say this instead:

✅ "Thank you for the offer. Given my track record and the responsibilities of this position, I believe a salary of KES 95,000 would reflect the value I bring to your team. Could we discuss this further?"

❌ "I was expecting more based on the job description and what we discussed."

This statement can be perceived as vague and lacking constructive feedback.

✅ Say this instead: "Thank you for your offer. Based on our discussions about the role and my understanding of the key responsibilities, I anticipated a different compensation package. Could we revisit the salary figure to better align it with the complexity of the tasks and the impact I am prepared to make?"
