Read about our interview with one former champion, Miss Vannavuth Sochanmalisphoung ,who reached the peak of 100 out of 100 points for her oral argument in her final round from the American Lawyer, shared some information about her legal competitions:
"Participating in legal competitions can be an overwhelming situation that we might encounter. Some People try to avoid being actively involved in it owing to the fear of failure. However, it is a very thought-provoking event and challenging occasion for everybody, which was well worth a try . If we only think about win and lose, we might end up with selfish success or horrible failure. In contrast, if we think of learning from it, we can earn experiences, knowledge, solidarity and peace. When we can overcome our fear of failure, we will gain our composure to fight with every daunting and tough obstacle.
Oral argument is a very crucial part of legal competitions. Generally, Oral Argument means presentation of legal reasoning by lawyers before a court in defense of their clients. The purpose of presenting the oral arguments is to persuade and sway the judges or people who have authority, to make a decision in favor of our side. Each party, usually, defendant’s lawyers and claimant’s lawyers are entitled to take turns to speak directly to the judges with an equivalent amount of time allotted to each. It is typical for judges to be active participants in oral argument. He or she is likely to interrupt the presenting lawyers and ask questions. The more one can provide answers that can satisfy the judges, the more one has a chance to win the cases. One needs high ability to present arguments effectively and answer questions intelligently.
However, in competition, it is not about win and lose, but it is about learning, sharing and improving. We can learn many skills during competitions, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
Enjoy it by regarding it as a fun game which can enhance our brain's capacity! It is not an enigmatic threat. "
