The coronavirus pandemic could cost the global economy between $5.8tn and $8.8tn (£4.7tn-£7.1tn), according to Asian Development Bank (ADB).

That's more than double last month's prediction and equates to 6.4%-9.7% of the world's economic output.

It comes as measures to slow the spread of Covid-19 continue to paralyse economic activity around the world.

Globally authorities have taken aggressive action to cushion their economies from the outbreak's impact.

A sharp fall of 11 percent in Lebanon’s GDP is expected in 2020 by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). It comes on the heels of a recession in 2018 and 2019.

The EBRD said: “The situation has been exacerbated by a default on debt repayments in March 2020, the ongoing economic crisis and, most recently, the coronavirus pandemic and the associated containment measures.”

While the economic outlook remains uncertain, the recovery will depend on the speed of the implementation of key reforms, including debt restructuring in collaboration with the International Monetary Fund. If these reforms are implemented swiftly, the EBRD report expects to see a return to growth of six percent in 2021.

Uber has launched the ‘UberMedics’ initiative in the UAE, which will provide healthcare workers with discounted trips to and from their workplaces in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The initiative forms part of a larger effort from the company to support healthcare workers and communities amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

In the UAE, UberMedics has partnered with a number of entities, including Amana Healthcare, part of Mubadala’s healthcare network.

The company will use UberMedics through an Uber for Business solution to transport caregivers to and from patient’s homes.

Other UberMedics partners include Saudi German Hospital and Zulekha Hospital.

The dynamic between Beijing and Washington has become so contentious in the coronavirus era that China experts now say the two major powers have stumbled into the early days of a new Cold War that could prolong the pandemic, exacerbate the economic devastation linked to the virus, and weaken the world's ability to thwart common threats.

"The consequences of the breakdown in US-China relations is going to be very grave for the world and for the global economy, because the ability of the US and China to work together was the keystone of the whole arch of globalization and global trade," Schell added. "With that pulled out, there's going to be a tremendous amount of disturbance."
