🇮🇳 Happy Republic Day, India 🇮🇳
This Republic Day feels especially meaningful to me.
On Friday, I had the joy of experiencing Anuradha Paudwal ji live in concert- an evening that was nothing short of magical. 🪄 On Saturday, I was blessed with the rare privilege of meeting her in person! (Thank you Kaushi akki!) To sit in her presence, to speak with her even briefly, was profoundly moving.
She was gentle, humble, loving, and gracious- despite being tired after multiple performances and days of immense dedication. Yet, she still made space for warmth, kindness, and genuine connection. That itself speaks volumes of the artist and the human being she is.
This meeting stirred a deep memory from my childhood.
Dil was the very first Hindi film I distinctly remember watching in a cinema. I was only five years old. My aunt had taken my sister and me to the theatre while babysitting us. I did not fully understand the story then, but I clearly remember how strikingly handsome Aamir Khan ji looked, how radiant Madhuri Dixit ji was, and most of all—the song "Mujhe Neend Na Aaye”. That song stayed with me. It has lived in me ever since.
Like many musical millennials who grew up loving Bollywood, my home was filled with Hindi film music. My grandmother owned cassette tapes of us singing classic 90s songs in our Hindi-as-we-heard-it .. 😅 and my strongest musical memories include “Mujhe Neend Na Aaye” and “Bahut Pyaar Karte Hain”. The 90s Bollywood era in Sri Lanka was powerful—radio stations constantly celebrated the voices of Anu ji, Kumar Sanu ji, and Udit Narayan ji etc. Their music shaped our entire generation.
I deeply regret never having the opportunity to meet Lata Mangeshkar ji. When she passed away, I was truly heartbroken. She was—and will forever remain—a Mahā Guru, a legend beyond comparison. After Lata ji, the one playback singer I always longed to meet was Anu ji. And this weekend, that long-held wish came true. ♥️ 🧿 🙏🏽
I carry immense gratitude for this moment—for the music, the memories, and the blessing of meeting a voice that defined so much of my childhood and my love for Hindi cinema.
On this Republic Day, I wish all my Indian friends, acquaintances, and the Indian community in Sri Lanka a very Happy Republic Day of India. 🇮🇳
May the spirit of art, unity, culture, and timeless music continue to connect us beyond borders!
With love and gratitude. 🙏🏽✨
