Tasmania has issued a new round of invitations under its Skilled Migration State Nomination Program

On 29 January 2026, the state invited 36 candidates for the Skilled Nominated visa (Subclass 190) and 26 candidates for the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (Subclass 491). The lowest invited scores were 51 for Subclass 190 and 30 for Subclass 491, significantly lower than many other Australian states.

Despite strong interest, Tasmania still has hundreds of nomination places available through to June 2026. Currently, 474 Registrations of Interest (ROIs) remain pending for Subclass 190 and 198 for Subclass 491, with processing continuing smoothly. The oldest unallocated application dates back to 3 December 2025.

Tasmania continues to attract employers and skilled workers, particularly in healthcare, engineering and agritech, supported by regular monthly invitation rounds that provide greater certainty for workforce planning. While federal visa requirements still apply, the state’s consistent nomination process remains a key advantage for eligible applicants.

🚨 NEWS ALERT | 29 January 2026

Australia Parent Visa Update: Long Queues and Strict Annual Caps Continue

In mid-January 2026, the Australian Department of Home Affairs confirmed that all Parent visa categories remain subject to strict annual caps and long queueing arrangements. Once the annual allocation for a program year is reached, no further Parent visas are granted, and remaining applications are carried forward to subsequent years, adding further pressure to already lengthy processing queues.

The Department has reaffirmed that Parent visa applications are processed strictly in lodgement order. A queue date is allocated only after applicants meet key health and character requirements, which means some applications may experience additional delays before officially entering the processing queue.

As at 31 October 2025, the Department released Contributory Parent visa applications with queue dates up to June 2018 for final processing. Parent and Aged Parent visa applications with queue dates up to June 2013 were also released. In addition, October 2025 marked an important milestone for applicants transitioning from temporary to permanent contributory parent visa pathways.

Current indicative processing timeframes remain extremely lengthy. Contributory Parent visa processing is estimated at approximately 15 years, while Parent and Aged Parent visas are estimated at around 33 years. The Department has advised that these timeframes are indicative only and may change depending on future planning levels and policy decisions.

The Department of Home Affairs has also confirmed that applicants will be contacted only when their application is ready for final processing. This update highlights the importance of realistic expectations and long-term planning for families considering parent migration to Australia, particularly in a program where demand continues to significantly exceed available places.

Australia Closes Immigration Operations at Three Overseas Posts — Visa Processing Remains Unaffected

Effective 31 December 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs has officially ceased immigration operations at three overseas locations:

Australian Consulate-General in Dubai

Australian High Commission in Singapore

Australian Embassy in Washington DC

These changes apply only to immigration functions carried out at the above posts.

Importantly, visa applicants will not be impacted by this decision.

All Australian visa applications will continue to be lodged online through digital platforms, and there is no requirement for applicants to attend an overseas mission in person. The Department of Home Affairs has confirmed that visa applications from these regions will continue to be processed through its global immigration network, in line with existing arrangements.

The Home Affairs website has already been updated to reflect these operational changes, ensuring transparency and continuity for applicants worldwide.

This move is part of Australia’s ongoing transition towards a fully digital and centralized visa processing system, aimed at improving efficiency while maintaining service standards.

📌 Key takeaway for applicants and agents:
Visa processes remain unchanged, online lodgement continues as normal, and there is no disruption to application assessments.

For accurate guidance and updates, applicants are encouraged to rely on official sources or consult registered migration professionals.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Australia Day! 🇦🇺

Today, January 26, Australians come together to mark the arrival of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788. Across the country, communities are observing the day with a mix of ceremonies, cultural events, and reflections on its ongoing significance.

In Canberra, national commemorations began with a citizenship and flag-raising ceremony, warmly welcoming new Australians from around the world. In Sydney, the WugulOra Morning Ceremony at Barangaroo celebrated the continuous culture of the Gadigal people through traditional dance and song.

Despite challenging weather conditions in parts of the country, communities in the Northern Territory and Queensland participated in fun runs, flag raisings, and citizenship ceremonies. South Australia hosted a First Nations-led Mourning in the Morning ceremony in Adelaide, focused on reflection and truth-telling. Meanwhile, Victoria and Western Australia held official events and community celebrations, including ceremonies welcoming new citizens.

January 26 continues to be observed in diverse ways, reflecting both national celebration and ongoing conversations around history, recognition, and unity.
