Rice Straw artistry is a venerable craft that dates back several centuries, yet it remains a little-known gem, with only a select few artisans dedicated to preserving this distinctive and exquisite form of leaf art. We stand alone as the sole practitioners of Rice Straw Art in Sri Lanka. Our creations are fashioned from rice straw, the desiccated foliage of the rice plant. The portraits I craft, in particular, are composed of innumerable minuscule fragments of rice straw and demand months to assemble a single artwork. We eschew the use of any artificial coloring or dyes, allowing the straw's inherent hues to shine through. The spectrum of shades you observe in rice straw art is the straw's own natural palette. This art form was birthed in an era predating our knowledge of how to concoct colors, paints, or dyes.
