"A Tribute to the Legendary Jimmy Cliff: Repatriation, Rhythm, and Reflection":
It is with profound sadness that James Coco Chea and the Harmonizers Entertainment Group of Liberia learned of the passing of the legendary Jimmy Cliff today at the age of 81. Our hearts are heavy as we reflect on the unforgettable musical interaction we shared with this towering figure in global music.
The Night We Harmonized, we had the distinct honour of backing and performing with Jimmy Cliff as part of the Garvey Movement, under the theme: "Motherland Repatriation A Must" organized by the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). The event took place at the Jamaica Resort on the Robertsfield Highway January 27, 2019.
Having listened intently as the Harmonizers played some of his timeless compositions, the legend himself felt the rhythm and was moved to join us. Jimmy Cliff stepped onto the bandstand and instantly electrified the crowd. His presence sent goosebumps and chills through the spines of everyone present.
He blessed the audience with an incredible performance, singing iconic hits that included:
"I Can't See Clearly Now"
"House Of Exile"
"Remake The World"
"Music Maker"
"So Many Rivers To Cross"
"Reggae Night"
A Legend's Endorsement
The true highlight came at the end of his set. Jimmy Cliff walked directly up to me and asked for my name. I told him, and then he asked, "what’s the name of the band?"
I proudly responded: "We are the Harmonizers."
He smiled and gave us an endorsement that will forever be etched in our memory: "You guys are truly Harmonizers." He then graciously asked to take photos with James Coco Chea and the Harmonizers Entertainment Group.
Hearing of his passing today brings back a flood of these cherished memories—of powerful music, profound connection, and a shared commitment to the spirit of the Motherland.
James Coco Chea and the Harmonizers Entertainment Group extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire musical body of the world. His message of peace, resilience, and repatriation will continue to echo across generations.
Rest in Power, Music Maker.
