🥁 I am thrilled to welcome Laura Stearn as a Consultant. 🥁

She will be helping us to further develop and amplify our Inclusion and Diversity offer.

Laura is a highly experienced individual with a diverse professional background. She started her career in the TV industry, working as a production coordinator on various TV documentaries. During her 12-year tenure at the Irish National broadcaster, RTE, Laura gained valuable expertise in selling TV documentaries and Drama programmes to International Broadcasters.

In 2019, Laura made a career transition and ventured into entrepreneurship by opening her own online stationery company called Fold & Seal. However, after running the business for two years, she recognised that her true passion lay in supporting and promoting female-owned businesses. This realisation led her to shift her focus and join an online business membership for women as a Community Manager.

In her role as a Community Manager, Laura was responsible for fostering engagement and creating a supportive environment within the online business community. Additionally, she was part of the Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) team, where she actively contributed to initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, equality, and inclusion among the community's members.

Laura's dedication to championing female-owned businesses prompted her to pursue further education in the field of Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion. Currently, she is studying for a Master of Business in EDI, which she is expected to complete this year. This academic pursuit will further equip her with advanced knowledge and skills to drive meaningful change and create more inclusive environments within the business community and beyond.

A very warm welcome Laura! ☺️

Lately, I've been thinking a lot about grief.

It's a topic that's come up frequently in conversations with clients, colleagues and friends, and of particular relevance to building resilience and making space for voice in the workplace. It has broader implications for psychological safety too.

I wanted to share my thoughts on it because I believe that how we cope with grief says a lot about who we are as people and how we relate to one another beyond the grey text of workplace policy.

If you're interested in some tips and resources for managing grief, head over to the blog!

Today the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC) Luxembourg has published its Guidelines for Selecting and Purchasing Coaching, Mentoring and Supervision Services, after nearly 18 months of work and commitment by volunteers.

As the coaching industry is extensive, fast growing and unregulated, this is a landmark guide to educate and empower the buyers of these services. We also encourage sellers to join our movement to professionalise, and uphold the highest industry standards of coaching, mentoring and supervision.

Have loved collaborating with Mary Devine Jannie Stricker, MSc Virginie Laye Dana Moldoveanu Brandes Sonata Kucin Louvigny and Anne Prévost

Thank you to Mary Devine, EMCC Lux President for inviting me to be a part of this journey and making me your YouTube hostess for the interviews!

The link to the interactive Guidelines shared is in my stories - please share it far and wide to help us professionalise the industry!

There is a lot of grief in the world. It is said that love is the other side of grief. Love offers the hope of a new beginning even as it takes stock of what has passed. Grief was for me the catalyst that took my career from 'is this it?' to 'this is it'! Three years on from the passing of my Papi, I am reminded of his legacy...

Would love to hear if you have made a big career change or life decision as a result of someone’s legacy. Let me know in the comments or DMs 🧡

Redesign employee experience to attract and retain women - with women.

The prevailing ‘return to the workplace narrative’, adds to the feeling of a lost opportunity to effect lasting worklife change, particularly for women and families who benefit from more flexible work. Companies who have made steps to secure flex arrangements are rare, and ahead of the curve.

As former journalist and occasional Workculturati contributor, Martin Barrow, highlighted in a LinkedIn post “for many millions of workers the dream of achieving a better life balance was only ever that... a dream. But many did aspire to big changes, with new life goals and a better work/life balance. Yet, already, this has proved illusory. I see packed commuter trains, people working long hours against unreasonable deadlines and growing anxiety over the cost of living crisis. Staff shortages and financial pressures mean that the new world of work is very much like the old…”

There is strong evidence that flexible work is good for women to work on their own terms, and while hybrid work could be the next best alternative, it can add extra visible and invisible pressures to navigate.

Gartner HR Research recently published a release highlighting 3 strategies to retain women in the labour force:

1. Allow Control Over the Workday to Avoid Fatigue… and moving forward, the hybrid workplace will require new norms and codified behaviors to safeguard performance, well-being and engagement.

2. Heighten Focus on Equity in the Workplace: women are more likely to want flexible work than their male counterparts. Yet, nearly half of remote female employees said they feel left out of activities and meetings that could enhance their career at least some of the time.

To ensure female employees’ careers are not negatively impacted, HR leaders should employ two tactics:

- Be intentional about in-person gatherings
- Move away from visibility-based management

3. Offer Fulfilling Work

Gartner data finds one of the most important retention attributes for women – exceeded in importance only by compensation – is the satisfaction they get from the work they do.

What else would you add to encourage retention?
