This programme has the following research aims:

1. To identify climate resilient species of wood for planting in our case study sites to restore biodiversity, and appropriate species of bamboo to provide a resource for fuel wood, construction and local enterprises.

2. To characterise the resilience of houses built using bamboo and develop a model house based on bamboo which provides greater durability and resilience to climate hazards than the construction materials currently used in each area.

3. To characterise the production processes and combustion of bamboo charcoal and use this information to improve bamboo charcoal production using the bamboo species chosen.

To combat deforestation and improve livelihoods resilience in Madagascar, this programme works with communities to explore socially acceptable and ecologically safe ways to use bamboo as an alternative to hardwood for fuel and construction.
