With great pleasure we announce that our team has completed another restoration and conservation project.

📍 Azzjoni Kattolika Institute, Zurrieq

These are, in summary, the interventions carried out:

• Rendering of the ground floor facade with macro-porous lime based plastering and finitura;
• Restoration of the ground floor facade;
• Restoration of the courtyard walls;
• Restoration of the wrought iron gate;
• Restroom renovation;
• Balcony and apertures restoration.

📖 History of the place:

This property belonged to Fr Ġużepp Zammit Falzon (15.04.1895 - 16.04.1964). In addition to serving the parish of Żurrieq as an exemplary priest, Fr Ġużepp worked tirelessly to strengthen the parish and the Maltese Catholic Action. He recognized the role of the laity in the Church and helped strengthen Maltese Catholic Action in the village of Żurrieq. So much so that Father Zammit Falzon offered the property in Triq San Mikiel where he lived and died for the use of the Maltese Catholic Action in Żurrieq.

The Maltese Catholic Action recognised the need for a youth centre in Żurrieq and the property hosted youth groups for several decades. Here, the youth found a place of refuge after school or work hours, where they could participate in informal and non- formal educational activities.

Along the years, the property suffered some damages and was in dire need of maintenance. An extensive renovation was carried out in order to transform it into a safe space adequate to serve its mission; working with youth.

The ultimate aim of the Maltese Catholic Action is that the Żurrieq Centre continues to be a safe and suitable place for today's youth, so that the legacy of Dun Ġużepp Zammit Falzon in Żurrieq continues

The official opening of the ŻAK center located at 38, Triq San Mikiel in Żurrieq, was on January 25. If you would like to help Maltese Catholic Action you can contact them on [email protected] or call AKM on 2122 2239.

📍Sir Alexander Ball’s Garden, Safi

This beautiful garden was the subject of complex and delicate conservation and restoration works carried out in the following phases:

• Cleaning by hand and replacing or consolidating damaged stone.
• Dismantling of the arch and reconstruction using the same stone.
• Restoration of the bee breeding rooms. 🐝
• Consolidation and structural reinforcement of the concrete base
• Replacement of stone water collection channels for the reservoir.

📖 History of the place:

Alexander Ball Garden was also known as "Il-Gnien tal-Kmand" (Kmand Garden).
Many gardens, around Malta are called Tal-Kmand.
Although these gardens are only two hundred years old, they are considered part of our important historical inheritance. Kmand Gardens are situated at Siggiewi, Qrendi, Haz-Zebbug, Gharghur, Gudja, Zejtun and Hal Safi amongst others.

The gardens were built between 1802 and 1808. A memorial stone with the Italian writing “Il Commissario Sir Alexander Ball Governatore di Malta” is found on the main door of each garden.

The one at Hal Safi is named Sir Alexander Ball to honour the first Governor of the Maltese Islands since the garden was built during his leadership.

One of Ball’s favourite gardens was exactly that of Hal Safi. In fact, it is known as Alexander Ball Garden. It was built in the road that from the town leads to Wied il-Qoton and ends by the sea. This road named Saint George was also referred to as ‘San Giorgio a Mare’.

The façade of the garden is 12 metres wide and seventeen-course high. It consists of an arch which incorporates the door and two seven-course windows. Till some years ago, on the low wall along the façade stood four stone-made vases. They were stolen during the night. The garden is almost ninety-six metres long. The walls are built in a way that if someone tries to climb over the wall, stones start falling from it. During the last few years, many parts of the wall fell down. Although they were re-built they were not done professionally.

A path, which starts from the front door and leads to the far end of the garden, is paved with stone slabs and decorated with columns on both sides. The garden is divided into the lower and the upper part. The stones cut from the digging of the garden’s well and reservoir were used to build parts of the wall.

For several years, the garden was private owned. Recently, the Government passed the responsibility of the Garden to the Local Council who made the necessary restoration and now the garden is open for the general public.

Each site is linked to the authentic emotion of bringing the of the past back to life by returning it to the community 🇲🇹. Every time I start a new job, I observe the surfaces and try to imagine what they will be like after the intervention, aware that we are faced with a new challenge where we can put into practice knowledge already acquired, new research on materials and surfaces and a good dose of !

⬇️ Here is the list of interventions carried out in this fantastic 300 year old townhouse : 🏠

• Manual removal of all layers of cement-based plaster that prevented its breathability
• Cleaning with nylon brush and clean, desalinated water
• Biocida application for removal of organic elements as fungi and lichens
• Replacement of the deteriorated stone and repair where necessary
• Opening of the old joints and repointing with lime mixture
• Application of a transparent finish ( Velatura ) to give a unified appearance to the restored fabric

We look forward to dedicating ourselves to your project
