Here comes a fresh charity update from Fanuwelo (Malawi), where Contribute Water built a water pump and kitchen garden in a pre-school.
In previous updates, we have focused on the life-changing impact of the water point, toilets, handwashing facilities and the role of caregivers in the Fanuwelo pre-school. Crucially, as well as supporting all the children attending Fanuwelo pre-school, the water point has dramatically improved the life of the 150 people in the surrounding community. Before the installation of the water point, community members had to walk over 400 metres away to reach the nearest source of potable water. This burden would often fall on the women and girls within the community. Additionally, the source of water would be used by many villages, leading to long queues and often a fee for usage. As the water was unprotected, it would be dirty and contaminated, and members of the community would frequently fall ill with diarrhoea and other water-borne diseases.
Now the community enjoy a conveniently located and reliable source of clean, safe water. Health has drastically improved and women and girls now have time to do other things. In the context of COVID-19, access to clean, safe water is especially crucial to effectively wash hands, for better health and to increase resilience to diseases.
We’ll end the update the update with a few words from one of the villagers:
“Our life is better now. Water is close by and our children aren’t falling ill with diarrhoea. The pump works well and the community has embraced it.”
Nellie Mphasa, parent of child attending the pre-school and community resident.
