Why networking feels exhausting?

With friends, we naturally notice discomfort.
- We include quieter people.
- We laugh.
- We tell stories.
- We find common ground.
- We help people feel at ease.

And somehow, the moment we enter a networking event, we become different people.
- We perform.
- We overthink.
- We ask scripted questions.
- We try to sound intelligent.
- We scan the room for who matters.
- We focus on what we can get.

Then we leave early, emotionally drained, wondering why networking feels so unnatural and sometimes unsafe.

Here’s what I have realised after working with professionals who say they are “not good at networking”:

It is rarely a skill problem. It is a human behaviour problem.

People do not suddenly lose their social intelligence in business settings.

They abandon it!

Because somewhere along the way, networking became associated with performance instead of connection.

Especially for quieter, more reserved professionals, this creates pressure, awkwardness, and emotional exhaustion.

But ‘Relational capital’ is not built by being the most impressive person in the room.

It is built by making people feel comfortable, seen, and genuinely glad they met you.

Networking is business.

But connection is still human.

If you don’t stand for something, you fall for everything”

I’ve heard this line many times over the years. And the more I work with leaders, the more I see how true it is.

In the corporate world, this doesn’t show up in dramatic ways.

It shows up in meetings:

1. When someone agrees to everything just to avoid conflict

2. When someone stays silent because they don’t feel “ready enough”

3. When someone over-explains to prove their worth

Or the opposite:

1. Becoming rigid

2. Pushing back on everything

3. Holding ground, but without intention

Different behaviors. Same root. A lack of clarity on “who I am when I show up?”

Most professionals build confidence like this:

-More knowledge
-More experience
-Better feedback
-Stronger results

All important. But all external.

So confidence keeps fluctuating…One good meeting and you feel confident. One difficult interaction and self-doubt creeps in 😕

That’s not confidence…That’s dependency.

In our ‘Influence Equation’ program, we focus on a different shift… from external validation to identity-led confidence.

Because when you are clear on who you are, you don’t become a people pleaser. You don’t become rigid.

You become intentional!

-You adapt
-You respond
-You stay flexible

Without compromising your self-worth

And that shift is visible…

In how you enter a room?
How you handle pressure?
How you engage with clients?
How you lead conversations?

This is not about building confidence.

It is about making confidence steady, calm and independent of outcomes.

You are not bad at communication!

You are just trying to perform.
Trying to sound intelligent.
Trying to prove your expertise.
Trying to justify your presence.

And somewhere in the middle of all that…the conversation stops feeling natural. You start thinking too much. You start holding back. You stop being fully present. Because pressure has quietly entered the room.

The truth is… most of us were never really taught how to connect.
We were taught how to impress. And there’s a difference.

Because influence doesn’t come from performance. It comes from making the other person feel at ease.

And that shift… changes everything 🤩

Where do you think performance shows up the most?
Meetings,
Presentations,
or networking?

𝗜𝗻 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲, 𝘄𝗲’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗔𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹,
𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀.

Thank you to our 𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 who embraced change in 2025. One thing is clear. When 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀.

Across organisations, three challenges are quietly eroding results.

🔹 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲
Leaders are expected to inspire, influence, and retain talent, often without formal authority, while working across generations and cultures.

🔹 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹
Teams follow SOPs, yet struggle to build trust, long-term relationships, and advisory credibility that drive sustainable revenue.

🔹 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝗶𝗹 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻
Strong content and busy slides, yet decisions stall, alignment is lost, and momentum fades.

That’s why in 2026, we’re introducing three focused development series designed to tackle these challenges head-on.

𝗘𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 | 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁

• 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆
• 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀
• 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 | 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 & 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲

• 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲, 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽-𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗺 𝘃𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲
• 𝗘𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗘𝘅𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗢𝗣𝘀
• 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘆

𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 | 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁

• 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲-𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀
• 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴
• 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀

𝗡𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Which of these challenges is 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘄, and what are you prepared to do differently in 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲?
