As we approaching the last two months of the year 2020, the unprecedented situation of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic are still unfolding. It is one of the toughest experience of our lifetime, the health and sanitary condition is under strict monitoring, the economy is under stress, job losses skyrocketing, prices of commodities going up and keeping the supply chain going without unnecessary restrictions are among the challenges we are facing.
While the world is figuring out, whether globalization and the inter-connectedness of the economy is still the right path moving forward, some communities are struggling to put food on the table, whilst government around the world are looking to bailout large corporations, under the pretext to save job, through massive amount of tax payers money will be injected.
The first thing the same corporate will do is to cut down costs and you have guess what?!... Layoff and retrenchment of the workers will be "inevitable". The people in power are once again missing the opportunity to boost their local agricultural sector which is so important, specially for small developing countries, it is key for those countries to be self- reliant; be less dependent on import and to mitigate risks should there be a disruption in the supply chain.
If there is one valuable lesson we learned from this Pandemic is to concentrate our effort to create a robust food production and make fresh fruits, vegetables cheap and accessible.
