📘 SERIES 2: CAREER & CV MASTERY

🔹 LESSON 4: WHY YOUR CV IS BEING REJECTED

⚠️ Hard Truth:

Most CVs are not rejected because the candidate is unqualified.
They are rejected because the CV is poorly presented.

Your CV is not your life story.
It is a marketing document.

If it does not sell you in 6–10 seconds, it goes to the rejection pile.

1️⃣ Your CV Is Not ATS-Friendly

Many companies now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

If your CV:

Has too many graphics

Uses tables improperly

Has poor formatting

Lacks keywords from the job description

It may never reach a human being.

🔥 Solution:

Use clean formatting

Use standard fonts

Include keywords from the job advert

Avoid unnecessary designs

> A beautiful CV that ATS cannot read is useless.

2️⃣ You List Duties Instead of Achievements

This is the biggest mistake.

❌ “Responsible for managing sales.”
❌ “Worked as cashier.”

These statements are weak.

Employers want results.

✅ “Increased monthly sales by 30% within 6 months.”
✅ “Reduced customer waiting time by 40%.”

Numbers create impact.
Results create confidence.

3️⃣ Your CV Is Too Long or Too Short

Common mistakes:

5–7 page CV with unnecessary details

1 page CV with no depth

Professional standard:

1–2 pages for most professionals

Maximum 3 pages for senior roles

Every sentence must justify its existence.

4️⃣ No Clear Professional Summary

The top of your CV must answer: Who are you? What do you specialise in? What value do you bring?

Weak example: “Hardworking and dedicated individual.”

Strong example: “Results-driven Finance Officer with 5+ years of experience in budgeting, financial reporting, and cost reduction strategies.”

The first 3 lines determine whether the employer continues reading.

5️⃣ Poor Structure & Formatting

Common issues:

Inconsistent fonts

Spelling mistakes

Poor alignment

Unprofessional email address

No clear section headings

Presentation reflects professionalism.

If your CV looks disorganised, employers assume you are disorganised.

6️⃣ No Customisation

Sending the same CV to every job is a mistake.

Each job requires:

Adjusted keywords

Highlighted relevant experience

Tailored professional summary

One generic CV = many rejections.

7️⃣ No Evidence of Soft Skills

Employers look for:

Leadership

Communication

Problem-solving

Teamwork

But don’t just list them.

Show them through achievements.

Example: “Led a team of 5 staff members to complete a project 2 weeks ahead of schedule.”

Your CV is not a biography.
It is your personal marketing strategy.

If it does not communicate value clearly and quickly, it will be rejected.

🚫 WHY YOUR CV IS BEING REJECTED

It is not because you are not qualified.

It is because:

❌ You list duties instead of achievements
❌ Your CV is not ATS-friendly
❌ You don’t customise for each job
❌ Your formatting looks unprofessional

Your CV must SELL you in seconds.

LESSON 4: Understanding Your Business Model & Strategy
(The Foundation of Sustainable Profit)

Many entrepreneurs say:
“I have a business.”
But when asked,
“How exactly does your business make money?”
They struggle to answer clearly.
That is a dangerous sign.

A business model is the structure of how your business:
Creates value
Delivers value
Captures value (makes money)
Without clarity here, growth becomes guesswork.

1️⃣ What Problem Are You Solving?
Every strong business solves a specific problem.
Ask yourself:
What pain does my customer have?
What frustration am I removing?
What desire am I fulfilling?

Example: ❌ “I sell clothes.”
✅ “I provide affordable, stylish corporate wear for young professionals.”
Clarity increases profit.

2️⃣ Who Exactly Is Your Target Customer?
Not “everyone.”
Be specific:
Age group
Income level
Location
Occupation
Lifestyle
If you target everyone, you attract no one.
Your strategy must match your customer.

3️⃣ What Is Your Revenue Stream?
How do you make money?
Examples of revenue models:
🔹 Direct Sales Model
You sell products directly to customers.
🔹 Service-Based Model
You charge for expertise or services.
🔹 Subscription Model
Customers pay monthly or yearly.
🔹 Commission-Based Model
You earn a percentage from transactions.
🔹 Hybrid Model
Combination of multiple income streams.
A strong business does not depend on one fragile source of income.

4️⃣ What Makes You Different? (Competitive Advantage)
Why should customers choose you over competitors?
It could be:
Better quality
Lower price
Faster delivery
Better customer service
Specialised expertise
Unique branding
If you cannot clearly explain your difference, the market will ignore you.

5️⃣ Your Cost Structure Matters
Many entrepreneurs focus only on sales — not costs.
Understand:
Fixed costs (rent, salaries)
Variable costs (materials, delivery)
Marketing costs
Operational expenses
Strategy is not just about making money. It is about controlling expenses wisely.

6️⃣ Growth Strategy: How Will You Scale?
Ask:
Can I expand to other cities?
Can I add new services?
Can I automate?
Can I hire a team?
A business without a growth strategy remains small.
...
A business model explains how you survive.
A strategy explains how you grow.

Practical Question:
“Can you clearly explain in one sentence how your business makes money?”

⚠️ WHY MANY BUSINESSES STAY SMALL
Your problem is not customers.
Your problem is structure.
Ask yourself:
1️⃣ What exact problem do I solve?
2️⃣ Who exactly is my target customer?
3️⃣ How exactly do I generate revenue?
4️⃣ What makes me different?

If you cannot answer these clearly, your business is operating blindly.

LESSON 3: Financial Discipline for Entrepreneurs
This lesson builds trust and seriousness.

Financial discipline separates amateurs from professionals.

1️⃣ Separate Business and Personal Money
Open a separate account. Track every transaction.

2️⃣ Budgeting is Mandatory
Plan:
Monthly expenses
Marketing costs
Operational costs
Emergency funds

3️⃣ Cash Flow is King
Profit on paper means nothing if cash is not available.
Always ask:
Can I survive 3 slow months?
Do I have reserves?

4️⃣ Record Keeping
Maintain:
Sales records
Expense receipts
Payroll
Tax records

This builds credibility and prepares you for growth.

Revenue is vanity.
Profit is sanity.
Cash flow is reality.
