Last week, I got one of those urgent calls from a best friend.
She started with:
"𝑰 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒊𝒔 𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆… 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒌𝒆 𝒍𝒂𝒔𝒕-𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒖𝒕𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔… 𝑩𝑼𝑻 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒂 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒔𝒑𝒆𝒄𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝒓𝒆𝒒𝒖𝒆𝒔𝒕. 𝑷𝑳𝑬𝑨𝑺𝑬. 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒏𝒍𝒚 𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒘𝒉𝒐 𝒄𝒂𝒏 𝒅𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒚𝒐𝒖."
She went on to tell me about her friend — a brilliant woman (her words, not mine) — who had been in Canada for years, with a PhD, two Master’s degrees, and a prestigious Bachelor’s. Yet despite applying to countless jobs, she had been met with rejection after rejection.
Her latest interview was scheduled for Monday (yesterday), and she wanted to do something different this time. The only time I had was Sunday evening. We agreed.
She sent me her CV and the job description. When I finally spoke with her, I couldn’t help but say:
"If I had even a quarter of your qualifications, maybe I’d be ruling an island somewhere!" 😂😂😂
But here’s the truth — brilliance alone doesn’t always land the job. In our 2-hour session, I didn’t overload her with technical prep. Instead, we focused on:
