The First Investor – Series Post #2
Title: Use What You Have – Even If It's Small
Last time, we said: You are the first investor. Write yourself a cheque with belief, time, and resourcefulness.
But maybe you're thinking:
“I don't have enough money.”
“I don't have a team.”
“I don't have a laptop or a big office.”
Here's the truth Malawian founders who win already know:
You don't need more. You need to use what you already have in your hands right now.
The second cheque you write to yourself isn't a big one. It's made of small, local resources you're ignoring.
Look around you. What's already yours?
✅ Time – Do you have 30 minutes tonight after dinner? That's 5 WhatsApp messages to potential clients.
✅ A smartphone – That's a Facebook post, a TikTok video, an SMS, or a voice note pitching your service.
✅ A notebook and pen – That's a list of 20 people you can call or visit.
✅ A Kabaza, Minibus or Tax –Transport That's a trip to meet one potential client face to face.
✅ K5,000 – That's data bundles for a week to stay online and market.
✅ K10,000 – That's printing some flyers or business cards to hand out at the market.
✅ A skill – Do you speak English and Chichewa? That's translation help. Can you write? Pitch letters. Can you talk? Call or visit local shops.
✅ Your story – Post it on a Malawi business WhatsApp group or page. Someone needs what you offer.
✅ A past customer or a neighbour – One conversation could bring a referral or a first paid gig.
Nothing is too small to invest.
The rule at The Founder's Desk:
Don't let what you lack stop you from using what you have.
Most Malawian founders stay stuck because they think big money comes first. But big results come from small, consistent action with what's already there.
Your move today (in Kwacha, not dollars):
Pick one underused resource you've been ignoring. Put it to work for your business by tomorrow.
Examples you can really do in Malawi:
· “I have K5,000 for transport – I'll go meet one shop owner in town.”
· “I have 1 hour tonight – I'll send 10 DMs on Facebook to Lilongwe business pages.”
· “I have an old customer at the market – I'll ask them to tell one friend.”
· “I have a smartphone – I'll record a 30-second video explaining my service and post it.”
Drop your resource and your action plan in the comments (in Kwacha!). Then go do it.
Because at The Founder's Desk – The Apex of Business Development and Support, we don't wait for dollars to fall from heaven. We start with the Kwacha in our pocket.
