"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember. Involve me and I will learn" B. Franklin

With the ever-growing demographics in Africa, there is a serious need for job creation and inclusion. A lot of rural girls and women who do not acquire proper education and skills are left behind in developmental opportunities and because of unemployment and co-dependency, they are at risk of GBV, sexual exploitation, HIV, child marriages and more.

From July 2022 to August 2023, the training involved unlearning old narratives, and developing the mindset of an empowered woman, how to use tailoring machines to make clothes and other items for commercial purposes and lastly, we taught them how to make upcycled handcraft items including door mats, hussle bags and more. This supports the zero waste circular fashion principle.

On 31st July 2023 we finally came to the finish line of our project and the women were presented with participation certificates. Community leaders were present to witness the amazing occasion and we successfully closed together.

This project was supported by the community leaders, their families and other community members. We implemented the project in partnership with the US department of state.

Congratulations to all beneficiaries. Thank you to all of our partners and we wish the women the very best as we continue to work together for economic development.

Economic freedom for women is a form of independence!

At ATP, we strongly believe that economic freedom for women is a form of independence from oppressive behaviours including GBV, gender inequalities and more. An empowered woman has a voice and the confidence to protect herself and make her own choices concerning her body and in other aspects of her life. For that reason, we believe in training women to shift their way of thinking and to develop their skills in order to become economically independent.

Throughout the project, we trained the women on how to develop a resilient business mindset and eventually we developed their creative skills by training them how to use manual tailoring machines to make clothes and other items and how to use their hands to make handcrafted decorative items inclusing door step mats, kids dolls and they are now learning how to make ladies handbags.

These items will be sold out at the markets and the funds will be used to sustain and to grow their businesses.

In June, at Amayi Titukuke Project- ATP, we had a hybrid meeting with the US Embassy team who are our partners in the project to discuss how the project has progressed, how the participants have benefited so far and the sustainability plan going forward. The women were invited into the discussion to explain the wins, challenges and the anticipated crearive business structures moving forward. It was a special day for our team, the women and our partners U.S. Embassy Lilongwe

In Machinga district, Ntaja... Women from the 2 villages danced, cheered and were happy after they were trained for 11 months on how to operate creative businesses, they were trained to make tailored clothes by professional tailors and they were also trained how to use remaining fabrics to make various handcrafted items like door step mats, dolls e.t.c in order to avoid throwing small pieces into landfills. Did you know that one of the main means of transportation in villages surrounding Ntaja, Machinga are bicycles? these are also used by women to go around taking care of their families and running different errands. We discovered this during theone year we have been implementing the Amayi Titukuke Project within the area.

In a bid to inspire circular fashion, we are teaching the women how to recycle, repurpose and upcycle. We are also training them on zero waste, making sure that they only cut what they need.

The women have been taught that when they are done making outfits, they should prevent the remnant pieces of fabric from being thrown into landfills but rather they should get creative with handcraft designs and use the remaining pieces to make doormats and other decorative pieces. These pieces will be sold to help to sustain their future businesses.

We have new tailors in town!!!!πŸ’ž

After being taught how to sew using machines, the women in Ntaja- Machinga district have been busy making a few items for sale. The clothes they have made throughout the exercise are for economic purposes and will be sold to sustain their tailoring businesses in the long run. After the tailors were done training them, the ladies are still practicing their skills.

The women were taught the art of taking professional tailoring measurements of a client. This took a little while as they needed to really understand this part to avoid making mistakes. In the end they got it and were happy with the learning process. Fashion designers in thhe making!!!!

During the first practical lessons, the women were taught about the parts of a tailoring machine. This knowledge will equip them with the skills to service and fix their own machines in future.

On January 8th, the tailors serviced all the machines to get them ready for practical lessons.

The participants were given a chance to speak about the impact of the project on their lives.

We envision a world where women are included and given the platform to economically build themselves.
