Accountability Starts With Us

On Friday, 14 August, Ethel Nyondo, representing Migration and Society (MASO), had the opportunity to attend a panel discussion at Mzuzu University’s American Corner, focused on accountability and civil responsibility. The discussion was organized by Umunthu LEAD.

The panel highlighted that accountability means being answerable for our actions and decisions. It must be built on honesty and start from the grassroots. As citizens, it is our responsibility to hold our leaders accountable and take an active role in promoting good governance.

The discussion also explored how ignorance, corruption, and limited civic education contribute to the misuse of public resources.

At MASO, we believe informed and active citizens are key to building communities where accountability, transparency, and responsible leadership thrive.

This afternoon, MASO participated in a Partnership Meeting on Community Philanthropy held at Mphatso Motel and organised by the Do Your Part Initiative (DYPI), with support from Mudzi Fund.

The meeting brought together stakeholders from across Mzuzu to discuss strengthening community-led development through meaningful partnerships. A key highlight was DYPI's new approach, which shifts from identifying problems first to engaging communities from the very beginning—from the idea stage through to implementation.

The discussions also emphasized that accountability should extend beyond donors to include community members, recognising that their voices, participation, and ownership are essential even when they have not contributed financially or in kind.

Together, we can build stronger, more inclusive, and sustainable communities by putting people at the centre of development.

Migration and Society (MASO) Commemorates World Day Against Trafficking in Persons at Lupaso Community

Today, Migration and Society (MASO) joined the global community in commemorating World Day Against Trafficking in Persons by conducting a human trafficking awareness campaign at Lupaso Community in Mzuzu.

The awareness session educated community members on the causes, warning signs, and dangers of human trafficking, while promoting safe migration and empowering participants with knowledge on how to prevent and report trafficking cases. Special emphasis was placed on protecting women, children, and young people, who are among the most vulnerable to exploitation.

Community members were encouraged to remain vigilant and work closely with traditional leaders, local authorities, and relevant institutions to identify and report suspected trafficking cases.

The Ward Councillor, traditional leaders, and community members commended MASO for the initiative, saying the awareness session had equipped them with valuable knowledge to recognize trafficking risks, avoid exploitation, and help build a safer community.

World Day Against Trafficking in Persons | 30 July 2026

Today, Migration and Society (MASO) joins the world in commemorating the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons under the global theme:

"Trapped Behind the Scam."

As part of this year's commemoration, MASO will conduct a human trafficking awareness and information session with the Lupaso Community in Mzuzu. The session is aimed at equipping community members with knowledge on how to identify, prevent, and report human trafficking.

Human trafficking often starts with fake job offers, false promises of education, or deceptive travel opportunities. Through community awareness, we can help protect vulnerable people from exploitation and promote safe migration.

We encourage everyone to:

Verify job and travel opportunities before accepting them.

Never hand over personal documents to strangers.

Be cautious of offers that seem too good to be true.

Report suspected human trafficking cases to the relevant authorities.

Together, we can build informed, resilient, and safer communities.

Together, we can end human trafficking. Protect yourself. Protect others. Report.

Today, Migration and Society (MASO) was honoured to join Thandazga Primary School in Mzuzu for its end-of-term closing ceremony under the Excel in Education Project.

Our team, comprising Project Officers Kingdom Chavinda and Emanuel Mwaipape, alongside Monitoring and Evaluation Officer Patrick Nkhata, celebrated learners' achievements and reaffirmed MASO's commitment to improving education in rural communities.

Speaking during the ceremony, Project Officer Kingdom Chavinda shared that the Excel in Education Project goes beyond academic support. The project promotes WASH, desk distribution, mentorship through study circles, SRHR education, and learner performance motivation.

"These are not just gifts. They are a reminder that hard work is rewarded and an encouragement for every learner to aim higher next term," he said.

The school also appreciated MASO's continued support, noting that the project has contributed to improved learner performance, positive attitudes towards education, and increased motivation among pupils.

The ceremony ended with the presentation of notebooks, notepads, pens, and pencils to the top-performing learners, recognizing their dedication while inspiring others to work even harder.

Despite challenges such as inadequate WASH facilities, lack of electricity, and barriers that affect school attendanceh, especially for girls, MASO remains committed to ensuring that every child has an opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed.

We also invite partners and well-wishers to join us in transforming education and creating brighter futures for children in rural communities.

Migration and Society (MASO) Proudly Participated in the Mzuzu Youth Open Day 2026

Yesterday, Migration and Society (MASO) joined other partners in supporting the successful hosting of the Mzuzu Youth Open Day at Katoto Secondary School Ground.

The event brought together young people, youth clubs, community-based organisations, government institutions, and development partners to celebrate youth participation while promoting opportunities for empowerment, innovation, and sustainable development.

The success of the event was made possible through the dedication, teamwork, and commitment of individuals from various organisations and youth clubs who worked tirelessly to ensure that every activity was well coordinated. The Youth Open Day provided an excellent platform for young people to network, showcase their talents, exchange ideas, and explore opportunities in entrepreneurship, education, leadership, and community development.

MASO Attends Regional Introductory Meeting on Strengthening Civic Agency & Accountable Donorship (SCAAD) Project

Today, Migration and Society (MASO) participated in the Regional Introductory Meeting between Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and the Centre for Social Accountability & Transparency (CSAT) at Chatonda Lodge.

The meeting introduced the Strengthening Civic Agency & Accountable Donorship (SCAAD) Project, a three-year initiative aimed at empowering local CSOs to promote accountability, strengthen civic agency, and advance Malawi's localisation agenda.

The discussions emphasized the importance of shifting from donor-driven approaches to genuine partnerships that empower local organisations to lead sustainable development initiatives.
