5 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY MISTAKES THAT KILL YOUR PROPOSAL (AND HOW TO FIX THEM)
An Executive Summary is the first thing funders or decision-makers read in your proposal and sometimes, it’s the only thing they look at before deciding whether to continue. That means if you get it wrong, your entire proposal could be ignored.

Here are 5 common mistakes that can instantly kill your proposal and simple ways to fix them:

Mistake 1: Making it too long
Your executive summary isn’t the full proposal. If it runs into paragraphs, you’ve already lost your reader. Keep it short and sharp just 2 to 3 sentences that capture the essence of your project.

Mistake 2: Leaving out the impact
Many summaries list the activities but forget to show why they matter. Funders don’t just want to know what you’ll do; they want to know the difference it will make. Highlight the results and benefits, not just the process.

Mistake 3: Using jargon
Technical terms and heavy language confuse readers and slow them down. Remember, reviewers may not be experts in your field. Use simple, clear language that anyone can understand.

Mistake 4: No clear ask
If you don’t say what you’re requesting, the reader may be left guessing. State the amount of funding or support you need upfront.

Mistake 5: Writing it first
Trying to summarize before you’ve written the proposal often leads to vague, weak summaries. Write it last after the proposal is complete so you can pull out the strongest points.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY MADE SIMPLE: THE 3 ESSENTIALS FUNDERS WANT TO SEE

A business proposal is a written document designed to convince potential funders, partners, or clients to support a project, service, or solution. It presents the problem you are addressing, the proposed solution, expected outcomes, and the resources required.
At the heart of every winning proposal lies the Executive Summary—a short, powerful section at the very beginning. Think of it as your proposal’s elevator pitch: in just two or three sentences, you must convince the reader why your proposal deserves their attention.
Why is this section so critical? Because most funders and decision-makers skim first before deciding whether to read the full proposal. If your executive summary is weak, your proposal may never be considered—no matter how strong the rest of it is. In other words, a strong executive summary gives you an 80% chance of keeping the reader hooked, while a weak one ends your chances before you even start.
So what should you include? Focus on the 20% essentials that deliver the most impact:
• The project name and the amount of funding or support requested
• A clear statement of the problem you’re solving
• Your proposed solution and the expected impact if funded
Here’s a pro tip: Write the executive summary last. Once the full proposal is complete, it’s much easier to pull out the most compelling points and summarize them clearly in two to three sentences.
REMEMBER, funders want clarity, impact, and professionalism fast. A concise, well-written executive summary sets the tone for the rest of the proposal and can make the difference between a winning proposal and one that gets overlooked.

BUSINESS PROPOSAL BREAKDOWN

How to Write Proposals That WIN Funding

Most proposals fail not because the idea is bad… but because the structure is weak.
At JPK Verse Consulting, we show NGOs, startups, and students exactly how to craft proposals that get noticed, trusted, and funded.

HERE’S THE WINNING STRUCTURE EVERY PROPOSAL NEEDS:
1. Cover Page – Clear title, organization name, and contact details.
2. Executive Summary – A powerful snapshot of the entire proposal.
3. Background/Problem Statement – The real issue you’re solving.
4. Objectives – Clear, measurable goals.
5. Methodology/Approach – How you’ll deliver results.
6. Work Plan & Timeline – Activities mapped out with precision.
7. Budget & Financial Plan – Transparent costs and funding needs.
8. Monitoring & Evaluation – How you’ll prove success.
9. Sustainability Plan – Ensuring results live beyond the project.
10. Appendices – Extra evidence and supporting documents.

Over the next few posts, we’ll break down each section in detail so you can finally write proposals that secure funding instead of getting ignored.

At JPK Verse Consulting, we don’t just write proposals we create winning strategies tailored for your project.
