UNIMASA RESTRICTS USE OF “THE BEHIND” DURING WORKING HOURS OVER SAFETY AND NOISE CONCERNS

The University of Malawi Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has issued new guidelines regulating the use of the area behind the Finance Offices building, popularly known among students as “the behind.”

According to a statement released by the Office of the General Secretary, the area continues to serve as an important shared space for student activities such as prayers, choir practices, and other gatherings.

However, after consultations with members of staff working within and around the Finance Offices building, concerns were raised regarding disturbances during official working hours.
In response,SRC has advised students to use the area before 7:30 AM and after 4:30 PM on working days.

The council says the measure is aimed at maintaining a conducive working environment for staff while still allowing students access to the space.

The statement also included a student safety advisory warning students against using the area extending towards the Chirunga Forest during very early morning and late evening hours when visibility is poor. Students have additionally been discouraged from using the area alone at any time.

According to the advisory, the precaution follows safety concerns such as attacks targeting students, snake bites, and other dangers associated with isolated areas and dark hours.

Students have therefore been encouraged to prioritise personal safety, remain vigilant, and exercise responsible conduct in all shared university spaces.

The statement was signed by UNIMASA General Secretary Mr. Trust Msiyambiri and Director of Religious Affairs Mr. Emmanuel Banda.

NATIONWIDE BUSINESS SHUTDOWN LOOMS OVER EIS DISPUTE

Business operations across Malawi are expected to come to a halt following a nationwide shutdown announced by various business associations in protest against the Malawi Revenue Authority’s Electronic Invoicing System (EIS).

In a formal letter addressed to district commissioners and law enforcement authorities, the associations notified officials of their decision to suspend business activities and hold demonstrations across the country.

According to the notice, the shutdown will take place from today, 4 May to Wednesday, 6 May 2026, affecting businesses in major districts such as Blantyre, Lilongwe, Mzuzu, Zomba, and others. The associations say this action follows several petitions and engagements with relevant authorities, which they claim have failed to address their concerns regarding the implementation of the EIS.

Business leaders argue that while the EIS is intended to improve tax compliance and transparency, it has instead created operational challenges for many small and medium enterprises. They say the system is difficult to use within the current business environment, placing additional pressure on traders who are already struggling to sustain their operations.

“Members will gather and conduct peaceful demonstrations, including vigils at MRA offices across Malawi, to express their concerns and demand urgent reconsideration of the EIS implementation framework,” reads part of the letter.

The letter has been signed by representatives from various associations, including small-scale importers, regional business leaders, and shop owners. Despite their firm stance, the associations say they remain open to constructive dialogue with authorities.

GRACIOUS THE GUY DROPS ‘DON`T BE DISTURBED’ EP TONIGHT

Zomba-based artist and University of Malawi (UNIMA) student, Gracious the Guy, is set to release his new EP titled “Don’t Be Disturbed” tonight under MOB Records, a project he describes as a “minor” but meaningful release ahead of a full album expected later this year.

Speaking ahead of the launch, the artist explained that the EP’s title reflects the unexpected nature of the project as the title comes in because people did not expect him to drop songs at the moment because he is working on an album.

One of the most emotional highlights of the EP is track number eight, “Pena,” which the artist revealed was created under difficult circumstances as the artist wrote that song and recorded it on a hospital bed since it was highly emotional and appreciative of the addressee.

Despite the health issues that complicated production process, Gracious the Guy managed to complete the project within a short period.

“It took me a month to record this EP, mostly with pressure because the members of the block record label are expecting me to continue working on my album. As I am writing, I am currently in the studio working on the album, no time to rest. December this year we drop,” he explained.

The 13-track EP explores creativity and cultural diversity and includes tracks like ‘AJ to the World,’ don’t be disturbed, ‘pena’, ‘tipange zoopsa’ and ‘closing remarks’ among others.

The EP is expected to be available on major streaming platforms tonight.

ZOMBA CITY COUNCIL LAUNCHES "UKHONDO NDI UDINDO WANGA" CAMPAIGN

Residents of Zomba today, May 1, 2026, came together in large numbers as the Zomba City Council officially launched the “Ukhondo Ndi Udindo Wanga” campaign, a national initiative aimed at promoting cleanliness and civic responsibility.

The event attracted a diverse group of stakeholders, including members of University of Malawi Wildlife Society, representatives from financial institutions such as Standard Bank and National Bank of Malawi, as well as officials from the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development. The launch was graced by the Minister, Ben Phiri, highlighting the government’s commitment to the initiative.

Activities began with a hands-on clean-up exercise across the city. Participants were seen sweeping streets, clearing drainage systems, and collecting litter in different parts of Zomba, setting the tone for a campaign focused on practical action rather than words.

Speaking during the event, Zomba City Mayor, Christopher Jana, expressed concern over the absence of some business owners, particularly from the Asian business community. He emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining a clean city.

“Expect me to visit your shops, since you did not show up today,” he said, stressing that every stakeholder has a role to play in the success of the campaign.

The mayor further noted that the initiative follows an executive directive from the President, reinforcing the national importance of cleanliness and environmental responsibility.

He concluded his remarks by expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development for its continued support to the council.

The “Ukhondo Ndi Udindo Wanga” campaign is expected to continue engaging communities across Zomba, encouraging residents and businesses alike to take ownership of their environment.

CCJP DISAGREES WITH PAS ELECTORAL COMMISSION ON KACHIFUMBU Vs. THAWALE DISPUTE

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) UNIMA Chapter has disagreed with the decision by the PAS Society Electoral Commission to accept Mr. Kachifumbu's nomination.

The development comes after Mr. Thawale lodged a complaint with CCJP, arguing that his opponent's nomination was not submitted in time, a claim CCJP confirmed.

According to a CCJP letter signed by its Director, Yankho Chingoli, and Programs Coordinator, Thokozani Mtulisha, the PAS Electoral Commission justified its decision, stating that the candidate failed to check the deadline due to an overload of WhatsApp messages.

"The Commission received the nomination because the candidate neglected to check messages on the WhatsApp platform because of too many messages," reads in part of the statement.

The Commission further said the nomination was accepted "out of humanity."

However, CCJP maintains that accepting the late submission was outside the prescribed timeframe and is "inconsistent with the guidelines set by the Electoral Commission."

"CCJP does not in any way agree with the decision taken by the Electoral Commission and disassociates itself from that decision," reads part of the conclusion.

PAS Society elections are set for 1 May 2026, with both candidates vying for the Publicity Secretary position.

MKOLONGO ORGANISES BONDO'S SPECIAL PARADE

As part of commemorating the impact of Humble CS Bondo, Christopher Mkolongo, former UNIMA SRC Welfare Director has sponsored a special parade, set to start at 12 noon.

The parade will begin from Matiya Primary School and proceed down to the campus, accompanied by Mganda drum beaters.

Mkolongo has disclosed that the event is meant to show genuine appreciation for the impact Bondo made during his tenure.

"This not just his graduation, it a collective event for all of us. So, we have to honor him through this parade as a way of appreciating his efforts," he said.

One of the students in his final year, Chimwemwe Nkhoma commented that the event is indeed necessary, as without Bondo's efforts, current finalists would have lagged behind in their studies.
