𝑭𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒅𝒔 𝒇𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑯𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝑲𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒘𝒏. What else but a meal; to catch up on memorable incidents.

When you are up on stage with the Global CEO of the group – that most certainly is a memorable moment to savour. It is a great honour. When senior representatives from every other office are watching.

Whole most memorable moments are on successful events, painful lessons with great learning points are just as memorable. Haha, stories have turning points, but some are so interesting, even experienced coaches can’t wait for the speaker to finish his story!

This is a bonding moment, not a coaching session. So we let loose a wee bit. Someone who believes there are no coincidences shared one of his memorable moments. We had a great time of sharing and bonding with an abundance joyful laughter.

The time of experimenting is coming to an end, and the focus is shifting away from AI tools towards structured adoption. (IDC Singapore’s CIO Summit for 2025).

AI was a major spending driver in 2024 and a mainstream strategic driver in 2025.

As Jane Chew puts it, the first step is to have clarity to form an AI Strategy.

Then implement it in phases. Phase 0 "Familiarisation with tools" is over.

When computerisation started in the 1980s, “GIGO” was the acronym for Garbage In, Garbage Out. In the mid-2020s, blindly using AI may only result in getting problems identified earlier without a solution.

Or worse, disrupting and/or slowing down processes that worked fine before the AI disruption.

I decided now is the correct time to embrace AI. Not too early and I will not be left behind.

𝑰𝒕 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒈𝒐 𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒊𝒏. It will permeate business and personal life, affecting how we communicate, work and live. The early rush to experiment is over, (IDC Singapore’s CIO Summit 2025) with firms moving from testing to a more structured adoption.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a mainstream strategic driver in 2025. Leaders want to use AI to run the business, glad the “tool” phase is over.

I had a fruitful discussion with Dr Reza Beikzadeh, an AI researcher, strategist, consultant and trainer. It is exciting times ahead and I would not want to spoil it for you, as you have your own ideas on how AI will permeate our lives.

𝙏𝙤𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙮 𝙤𝙪𝙩-𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 - 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 accommodate and tolerate? OR speak your mind, because it is your right.

As a trainer/coach, I say speak with dignity, courage, honesty and openness. Not timidly, with a minimalist mindset to quickly retreat into invisibility. Because I have not been in this extreme situation.

But then, this experience found me! The internal struggle was significant.

I totally support Psychological safety and the group leader did a good job on this. How safe did I feel? I was guarded in my comments, tolerating issues I did not totally agree with. Openness and honesty took a back seat.

I will coach and teach with a lot more empathy, encouragement and affirmation. Especially in asking leaders to change in cases courage is needed.

Your turn. Do comment how you THINK you will behave.

𝑺𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒄 𝑾𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒄𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒏𝒈: Get a new perspective by starting a Workforce Plan with a Supply Chain viewpoint and complete the process with Human Resource expertise.

The analogy will break down somewhere but you can have
- talents as the products,
- new skills as new products and
- skills which are losing their relevance as products nearing their life cycle.

Modifying some features on products relate to reskilling
and upskilling.
This change from the same old process of
- projecting staff numbers needed
- new skills that are critical
- skills which may soon become extinct
- cost-effectiveness of timing the acquiring of new skills can produce new insights.

Skills in Data analysis, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), Artificial Intelligence, robotics, automation and the permeation of mundane tasks being eliminated would be areas to consider.

It's the rainy season, so why not go camping?
In a thunderstorm, will the rain seep through the tent?
After a thunderstorm, how beautiful will the sky be?

I like the sound of night insects as I am away from the concrete jungle - white noise to aid my sleep.
How do I keep the mosquitoes away?
At dusk, what does the campsite look like?

Yes, I had dinner, after taking the photo when the lights came on.

The tendency to be complacent is very real. It’s easy to assign lower priority to training when you have conducted so many successful sessions.

An example is not making modifications to training materials designed 3 years ago. You had marvelous course ratings and feedback, plus you have pressing profit-contributing tasks. It is so easy to “wing it” and only realise the behavioural norms of the audience have change. Your reputation as a trainer may not be flying high now!

The course design, especially for activities to reinforce adult learning, needs to be modified. Attention spans, the norms of working and sensitivity to constructive feedback have changed.

audience interaction and facilitation skills take on more importance. Ask more probing and reflecting questions to raise the audience’s self-awareness. Listen carefully to their answers to craft your next thought-provoking questions.

3 points to emphasise on facilitation skills:
1) Ensure nobody can hide in the shadows by not saying a word
2) Tactfully wean those addicted to hearing their own voices all the time, and
3) Skillfully re-direct energy when disagreements get passionate

It is tempting to unleash all your knowledge and expertise in the shortest possible time, so that the audience can return to making profit as soon as possible. But, participants cannot function as Generative Artificial Intelligence (G*I) chatbots. There comes a time when “information overload” happens and you cannot tell them to “level up.”

Serious learning can be FUN, when training is done appropriately.

𝑨 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒅𝒔 or these photos? High energy and positive emotions. My last course for 2025.

Boy, was it an interactive session! Can serious learning be FUN? For quicker understanding of concepts and longer retention. Adult, experiential learning, without "gaming" accessories?

In these photos, who are the introverts who are aggressively quiet in meetings and definitely in discussions? Since it is so easy to identify them, who are the extroverts?

Should leaders be chameleons; changing their behaviour depending on the situation?

There are times for extrovert leaders to be quiet, observing to encourage open, honest communication. For staff who are not articulate or have a good command of the language, to elaborate their points. Confident extrovert leaders will patiently let different/opposing views be fully expressed without the need to “shout down” all opposition.

The usually quiet potential leaders speak up assertively when appropriate; when the discussion is heading off in a wrong direction or going off-topic. They will step in with explanations or when the emotional intelligence level is dropping to dangerous levels.

To round off sharp edges in grooming leaders, is it easier to effect behaviour change
· in “pulling back” dominant, highly self-confident potentials or
· to “push” those who shy away from the spotlight, analyse deeper and are seemingly satisfied with their current level of accountability?

I would love to know your opinion in the comments. On the relative ease of grooming leaders by helping them to “tone down” or by “pushing” them forward to lead from the front, by example.

𝑳𝒆𝒂𝒅𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝑯𝑶𝑫𝒔. HODs can enjoy their work more after replenishing their emotional tanks.

Get away from blue light and use pencil and paper. Better still, use coloured pencils - to draw instead. And here we have a drawing with coloured pencils.

This firm has a beautiful culture. People with the same seniority sit together at lunch and often support each other in the discussions. I expected the usual amount to underlying rivalry to surface every now and then, especially when I turn on the instigation.

To my pleasant surprise, they did not get drawn into one-upmanship. The instigation was to no avail! Kudos to the firm.

We went through leading with our eyes open, using AI but leading humans, positive attitudes and of course enhancing departmental performance.

Since no HOD has ALL the answers, we discussed using the available assets within each department. HODs can drastically reduce fire-fighting time by enabling their staff to give-and-take wisdom and knowledge among themselves. This frees HODs to have a lot more time to do the tasks that only they can do in their department – the high value work.

Some of the Action Reflection Learning Tools from Leadership In Motion were shared with this group.

They really had a good go with hands-on experiential learning in using these tools during the course. What an initiative to already have finalised plans, during the course, to coach their staff with the new concepts gained.

It is no surprise that both the Regional MD and the MD attended the full 2 days!
