What are 5R's - Refuse, Reduce, Re-use, Repair, Recycle?

The 5 Rs of waste management are a hierarchy of practices that prioritize reducing waste generation in the first place. They are:
Refuse: This means saying no to unnecessary items. This could involve refusing plastic bags at the store, opting out of junk mail, or avoiding single-use disposable products.
Reduce: This involves consuming less overall. This could be buying only what you need, avoiding impulse purchases, or choosing products with minimal packaging.
Reuse: This means finding new uses for old items instead of throwing them away. This could involve using reusable shopping bags, refillable water bottles, or repurposing old jars for storage.
Repair: This involves fixing broken items instead of replacing them. This could involve learning to mend clothes, fixing leaky faucets, or taking electronics to a repair shop.
Recycle: This is the traditional concept of recycling, where waste materials are processed into new products. This should be the last resort after considering the above options.
By following the 5Rs, we can minimize the amount of waste we generate and conserve resources. It's important to note that refusing and reducing are generally considered more important than recycling, because they prevent waste from being created in the first place. 😎

The Issue Of Electronic Waste

Electronic waste or e-waste is a global issue. More than 50 million tons of e-waste are produced each year. According to The Environmental Protection Agency only 15–20% of the e-waste is recycled, and the rest of electronics go directly into landfills and become an electronic waste and some goes to incinerators.

Electrical waste is a rich source of toxic and valuable resources. Complex electronics may contain as many as 60 elements. This gold (Au), silver and the platinum group metals. Concentration of metals within the electronic waste is generally higher than a typical ore, such as copper, aluminum, iron, gold, silver, and palladium.

These e-waste can become a threat to the environment and to human health if they are not treated, disposed of, and recycled appropriately. In 2019, the world generated (53.6) Mt of waste electrical and electronic equipment but just (17.4)% was officially documented as properly collected and responsibly recycled.
