We've Been Asking the Wrong Question About BEMT.

For years, formulators have asked:
"Can this oil dissolve enough Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (BEMT)?"
Our recently published research suggests a different one:
"Can this oil help BEMT perform at its best?"

That shift in thinking may change how we approach sunscreen formulation.

Our study shows that the oil phase is more than just a solvent. By creating different molecular environments around BEMT, oil polarity can influence how efficiently the UV filter absorbs UV energy and dissipates it safely—ultimately affecting photostability, ROS generation and SPF performance.

In other words:

The oil doesn't just carry BEMT. It helps BEMT perform.

This research doesn't replace conventional formulation principles such as solubility—it adds another dimension to designing high-performance sunscreen systems.

These insights are also guiding the formulation support we provide for SUNOBEL® SHELL, our Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine (BEMT) UV filter.
