📱 BNPL in Malaysia: Convenience Today, Responsibility Tomorrow

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) has become part of everyday life for millions of Malaysians.

📊 Here are the latest figures (as at 31 December 2025):

👥 7.5 million active BNPL users
💰 RM4.9 billion in outstanding BNPL financing
⚠️ 3.3% overdue repayment ratio
🏦 BNPL accounts for only 0.3% of Malaysia's total household debt

These numbers tell us an important story.

Contrary to popular belief, BNPL is not currently a major threat to Malaysia's financial stability. The overdue ratio remains relatively manageable, and BNPL represents only a small portion of overall household debt.

However, as a Licensed Financial Planner, I believe the bigger concern isn't today's default rate—it's tomorrow's financial habits.

Many people ask: "Can I afford RM150 per month?"

A better question is: "How many monthly commitments have I already made with my future income?"

A few RM50 or RM100 instalments may seem insignificant on their own, but multiple commitments can quietly reduce your ability to:

✅ Build an emergency fund
✅ Save for retirement
✅ Invest consistently
✅ Handle unexpected financial emergencies

BNPL is a financial tool - not free money.

Used wisely, it helps improve short-term cash flow and offers payment flexibility.

Used without planning, it can slowly erode your financial resilience.

Before you click "Buy Now, Pay Later", ask yourself these five questions:

✔️ Is this a need or a want?
✔️ Would I still buy it if instalments weren't available?
✔️ Can I comfortably afford the repayments even if my income changes?
✔️ How many other BNPL commitments am I currently paying?
✔️ Will this purchase move me closer to or further from my long-term financial goals?

Remember:
Financial freedom isn't measured by how much you can buy today. It's measured by how much financial flexibility you preserve for tomorrow.

Spend wisely. Borrow responsibly. Plan ahead.

🦁 A Meaningful Journey Back to Kukup, Pontian

This weekend, I travelled more than 300km from Kuala Lumpur to Kukup, Pontian to support the retreat organized by the Lions Club of Melaka Raya.

My sincere appreciation to current President Emily and Incoming President Lion Marco Tan for the invitation. It was a wonderful opportunity to revisit Kukup, a place I had not been to for more than 20 years.

Special thanks to Incoming Membership Chairperson Lion Charlotte for her thoughtful arrangements and hospitality. I was truly touched by the warm welcome and overwhelming support from all club members. It was also a pleasure to reconnect with Lion Han, former GMT Coordinator, whom I first met during the chartering of the Lions Club of KL Finnamic back in 2019.

During the communication workshop, we discussed how effective communication can strengthen teamwork, improve service impact, and create a more engaging member experience. Strong communication builds stronger clubs, and stronger clubs attract more people who want to serve.

As Lions, our mission is not only to serve, but also to inspire others to join us in making a difference.

For the coming Lions year, Lions Club of Melaka Raya has an exciting opportunity ahead. By growing at least 14 new members, the club can strengthen its service capacity, develop future leaders, and create an even greater impact in the community.

这个周末，我来到了一个距离吉隆坡超过300公里的柔佛龟咯百年海上渔村支持马六甲拉也狮子会举办的活动。

感谢候任会长 Marco Tan 的邀请，让我有机会重返这个阔别超过20年的地方。

特别感谢候任会员主席 Charlotte 细心周到的安排，以及全体会员热情洋溢的欢迎与支持，让我倍感温暖。此次也很开心再次见到前国际会员发展团队（GMT）协调员 Ln Han。我们最早是在2019年筹组吉隆坡财劲狮子会时结缘，如今再次相聚，格外珍贵。

在此次《有效沟通》分享中，我们探讨了沟通如何提升团队凝聚力、增强服务影响力，以及创造更优质的会员体验。
