Search for missing angler starts in Tasik Gubir

S*K: A search and rescue operation has begun for a 20-year-old man feared drowned during a fishing trip at Tasik Gubir, near here, today.

S*k fire station assistant operations chief Zulkhairi Tanjil said a team was scrambled upon receiving a distress call at 4.57pm to start the search and rescue operation.

"The Kedah operations centre answered an emergency call about a drowning victim through MERS 999 and a five-man team and boat were deployed to the scene in Tasik Gubir.

"The location is 43km from our station… the Water Rescue Team is also assisting in this search and rescue operation," he said.

Meanwhile, S*k police chief Deputy Superintendent Abdull Razak Osman, when contacted, confirmed the incident and said based on preliminary information obtained, it is possible that the victim went to Tasik Gubir to fish.

"Investigations are still ongoing and the search and rescue operation will continue until tomorrow," he said. -- Bernama

Frontline fireman who took part in Batang Kali landslide rescue efforts dies

KUALA LUMPUR: Rawang Fire and Rescue Department station chief Abd Aziz Usoff who took part in the Search And Rescue (SAR) operations for the landslide tragedy at the Father's Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali on Dec 16 has died from a heart attack on Wednesday.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Datuk Norazam Khamis said that Abd Aziz passed away at around 7.55am at the age of 49.

"Abd Aziz was among the frontline officers during the recent SAR operations at Batang Kali.

"In fact, he was among the first to arrive on location at the scene of the landslide even though the tragedy happened in an area that was not under his care and responsibility.

"He had served the department for about 15 years, and I can tell you that he was a very dedicated, responsible and committed towards his duty as a fireman. His loss will be felt and it will be difficult to replace such an outstanding officer," he said when contacted by Berita Harian yesterday.

Norazam said that Abd Aziz remains were brought to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for post-mortem before being brought to Masjid Jamek Nurul Iman in Rawang.

"He was buried at 9.30pm on Wednesday night at the Masjid Al-Ittihad Muslim Cemetery in Sungai Kob, Karangan, Kulim, Kedah.

"Abd Aziz who hailed from Kampung Banggol Penyegat, Karangan leaves behind wife Siti Mardhiah Nayan@Ahmad and four sons," he said.

Landslide SAR operation deeply affected rescue personnel

The search and rescue (SAR) operation of the landslide tragedy at the campsite of Father’s Organic Farm, Gohtong Jaya, which ended today, left profound effects on the various members of the rescuing team.

Hulu Selangor Fire and Rescue Department head Ahmadi Muhamad Hasan said apart from the physical exertion, the personnel were also emotionally affected during the nine-day SAR operation.

He said the soft earth and rainy weather also hampered movements and demanded the perseverance of rescuers.

“It cannot be denied that the emotions of the team at ground zero are sometimes severely challenged when they failed to find any victims or new indications on their whereabouts,” he told Bernama today.

Ahmadi said rescuers were given therapy and words of encouragement to raise their morale to continue looking for victims.

Despite the discovery of the bodies of four family members who were the 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th victims on the seventh day of the search, he said the SAR operation continued to face difficulties.

“To find just one more victim in a very wide area of almost 15 acres is very difficult,” he said.

Ahmadi said that, in addition to using excavators, rescue workers with tracking dogs had to search the same area many times to locate victims.

“Thank God, finally at around 4.30pm yesterday, we managed to find the last body. As a rescue team, finding a victim is the most effective medicine to remove all our fatigue,” he said.

Earlier, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani officially ended the SAR operation at 12 noon after he confirmed that all victims have been accounted for.

A total of 92 victims were involved in the landslide on Dec 16, 61 of whom survived. Among the deceased were 18 adults and 13 children, including a one-year-old baby.

In total, 20 bodies were found in sector A (hill view), one in sector B (farm view), and another 10 in sector C.

Jet Airways CEO’s throwback picture from 2009 reminds netizens of LOST Indian airlines

Much like Anand Mahindra, who keeps sharing interesting anecdotes and content related to the Indian automotive industry on Twitter, Jet Airways CEO, and aviation enthusiast Sanjiv Kapoor, who has previously worked for Vistara and SpiceJet, is also active on the micro-blogging site and share interesting tweets related to the Indian aviation industry. He is also vocal about various aviation related incidents and recently gave his insights and opinion on a viral video from an IndiGo flight, where a cabin crew got into a heated argument with a passenger over the meal served on the Istanbul-Delhi flight.

On December 24 (Saturday), Sanjiv Kapoor has shared yet another interesting post on Twitter. He shared a few photographs of planes parked at an airport from 2009, which, if seen closely, reminds us about the sad history of the Indian aviation industry. In a tweet captioned, "Flashback to Dec 24, 2009" Kapoor shared two photographs, one showing an Air India's Airbus A320 plane wearing the old livery of the then government owned airline, with orange and blue paint job. The current livery of Air India consists red and white colour scheme.

However, the photograph that draws our attention is the second pic with multiple planes parked at an airport, which seems like the Delhi International Airport. As seen in the image, multiple planes belonging to brands like Jet Airways, Kingfisher Airlines, IndiGo Airlines, and Deccan Airlines are parked. What's sad is the fact that 3 out of these 4 airlines visible in the image are now defunct and non operational.

Later, he shared yet another tweet, with individual photos of some of the older airlines in India, including Indian Airlines, which is now Air India, Air Sahara, yet another airline that's not in operations anymore among others.

The business of aviation is not an easy one with multiple safety related protocols in place and the dependency on the government for rules related to flying. Among the three defunct airlines, Jet Airways is now making a comeback under the ownership of Jalan-Kalrock consortium, however, has missed several deadlines due to delays in the transfer of ownership due to certain disputes being reviewed by the courts.

On the other hand, IndiGo airline is now the largest domestic air carrier in India, with over 55 percent market share. The next big airlines, like Vistara and Air India are close to 10 percent in market share only. As per the latest numbers shared by DGCA, domestic passenger traffic has hit an all-time high, and during November 2022, 117 lakh passengers travelled in India on flights.

In 2022, India also saw a new entrant in terms of Akasa Air, started by late Rakesh Jhunjhunwala. Also, with Tata Group buying Air India from the government, the former national airline is making drastic changes and aims to gain newer heights. Tata Group is now the largest aviation conglomerate in the country with four airlines under the umbrella - Vistara, AirAsia India, Air India Express and Air India.

Quest for decarbonisation: 59% of Indian fleet comprises fuel-efficient aircraft, data reveals

When it comes to taking viable and long-lasting steps in its quest to achieve decarbonisation, India's airline fleet beats the world’s current, in-service airline fleet hands down. According to data provided by the European aerospace corporation Airbus, only about 20% of the world’s current, in-service airline fleet comprises the latest generation of aircraft, with most of the commercial airline aircraft in use today being previous generation fuel guzzlers. Meanwhile, 59% of India's airline flee ..
In the coming decades, fleet modernisation — a mid-term solution to bring down the aviation industry’s carbon emissions — is set to see the percentage of fuel-efficient aircraft go up globally. By 2041, new generation passenger aircraft will represent 95% of the operated fleet, as per the latest Airbus Global Services forecast (2022-2041).
