Here are basic rules for approaching a traffic intersection:

At a Traffic Intersection
1. Slow Down and Stay Alert
Begin reducing your speed as you approach. Scan the intersection in all directions β€” left, right, and straight ahead β€” before entering.
2. Obey Traffic Controls

Red light β€” Come to a complete stop behind the stop line.
Yellow light β€” Prepare to stop; do not speed up to beat it.
Green light β€” Proceed, but still check for crossing traffic.
Stop sign β€” Come to a full stop, even if the road appears clear.
Yield sign β€” Slow down and give way to oncoming traffic.

3. Stop at the Correct Position
Stop behind the stop line or, where there is none, before the crosswalk. Never stop in the middle of an intersection.
4. Yield to Pedestrians
Always give way to pedestrians crossing at marked or unmarked crosswalks, both before and after turning.

5. Follow Right-of-Way Rules
Yield to vehicles already in the intersection.
At a four-way stop, the first to arrive goes first. If arriving simultaneously, yield to the vehicle on your right.
When turning left, yield to oncoming straight-moving traffic.

6. Signal Your Intentions Early
Indicate your turn well in advance β€” at least 30 metres before the intersection β€” so other drivers and pedestrians can anticipate your movement.

7. Never Block the Intersection
Only enter an intersection if you can fully clear it. Blocking an intersection during congestion is illegal and dangerous.

8. Watch for Blind Spots and Hidden Hazards
Look out for cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians who may be harder to see, especially when turning.

9. Avoid Distractions
Put your phone down. Intersections demand your full attention, as most collisions happen at or near them.

10. Be Patient
Never rush through an intersection. A few seconds of patience can prevent a life-altering accident.

General Fundamental Traffic rule:

Always yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
Drivers must slow down and stop for pedestrians who are crossing at marked or unmarked crosswalks. This means:

Scan ahead for people waiting at or entering the crosswalk
Come to a complete stop before the stop line, not in the middle of the crossing
Wait until the pedestrian has fully cleared your lane before proceeding
Never pass another vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk β€” they may be yielding to someone you can't yet see

This rule protects the most vulnerable road users and is law in most countries.

Did you know? Most road incidents in the
transport sector are caused by driver
fatigue and inadequate training β€” not
mechanical failure.

Your drivers are your biggest asset and
your biggest liability. The difference
is training.

At STS we have spent 25 years building
safer, more skilled and fully compliant
teams across the SADC region.
