If you can’t find Palm Kernel Oil (PKO) in your country, make use of bleached palm oil — the normal red oil used for cooking. This is often what stops many from making bar soap and putting what they’ve learnt to work.

HOW TO BLEACH YOUR PALM OIL (Simple Steps)

1. Pour the red palm oil into a clean pot.

2. Heat it on low heat — don’t allow it to burn or smoke too much.

3. Add a small quantity of activated charcoal (about 1–2 teaspoons per litre of oil).

4. Stir well and allow it to heat gently for a few minutes.

5. Remove from heat and let it cool slightly.

6. Filter the oil using a clean white cloth or sieve to remove the charcoal.

You’ll notice the oil is now lighter and clearer, ready for soap making.
Simple and effective 👌

📌 Why activated charcoal?

• Absorbs the deep red pigments in palm oil, helping to lighten the colour.

• Removes impurities and odour, making the oil cleaner for soap production.

• Gives a clearer, more neutral oil, so bar soap won’t come out too dark.

• Improves the final look of the soap, especially for light-coloured or patterned bars.

Just heating red oil alone might not be enough — the activated charcoal does the real bleaching work.

📌 If activated charcoal is not available, there are alternatives:

✅Option 1: Heat-only method

• Pour the red palm oil into a pot.
• Heat on very low heat for a longer time.
• Stir occasionally and don’t let it burn.
• The colour will reduce from deep red to a lighter brown.
(The oil won’t be as light as with charcoal.)

✅ Option 2: Use white clay (if available)

• Add a small quantity of clean white clay (like kaolin).
• Heat gently, stir well, allow to cool, then filter.
• Helps absorb some colour and impurities.

✅ Option 3: Buy already bleached palm oil

Many markets sell bleached palm oil used by soap makers.
Ask oil sellers or local soap producers around you.

Important note:
Good bar soap can still be made even if the oil isn’t perfectly white. What matters most is quality, hardness, and cleansing power not just colour.
