COUNSELS FROM ANITA PAPA'S 'THE POSITIVE US' AT ABC'S OCTOBER READING
I walked into an already saturated hall, this afternoon, having earlier attended two other events. The resourceful Coordinator of the ABC, Mary Jonas, took the readers on a tour of Anita Papa's 'The Positive Us.' The bad weather could stop the reviewer but not the session.
'Amazing' is the perfect way to describe the manner in which our student-guests from Vikydyl College expressed their views about the book. Their choice of words as well as the quality of the ideas they expressed made Mr Utibe Ibanga, a lecturer in English at the Akwa Ibom State College of Education, wonder what the students' real ages were.
The key word in the review was 'relationship,' as suggested by the term 'us' in the book's title. Whether the relationship is familial, friendly, neighbourly or romantic, the fundamental principles guiding it are the same:
-All relationships require loyalty;
-Friends should protect the secrets of their friends, even if they part ways;
-As much as possible, friends who can no longer stick together should part peacefully;
-No friendship is important enough for anyone to lose themselves for;
-Self love is the standard for love of neighbour;
-Friends and other people in relationship should respect each other's boundaries;
-Where one becomes afraid of expressing oneself because of the fear of losing the relationship, self worth is lost;
-A healthy self worth includes deciding how one wants to be treated, demanding to be treated right and endeavouring to treat the other person the way they want to be treated;
-Ability to say 'No' when necessary is a virtue.

We were invited but we took over the show and wowed the entire club.
