OGUN PDP CONDEMNS OGUN GOVERNMENT FOR "MANDATING" TEACHERS TO ATTEND POLITICAL PROGRAMMES

_Says It’s a Violation of Teachers’ Rights and an Abuse of Power_

ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE – The Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the All Progressives Congress, APC-led government of compelling public school teachers to attend its political programmes.

The party described the act as a "barrier" to democracy and a denial of teachers’ fundamental rights.

According to the PDP, using civil servants, particularly teachers, for partisan activities sets a dangerous precedent ahead of the 2027 general elections.

"IT IS COERCION, NOT SERVICE"

In a statement issued to journalists in Abeokuta on Friday, the Ogun PDP Publicity Secretary said the issue was reported across several local government areas where teachers were allegedly directed to attend APC rallies and sensitization programmes during school hours.

The PDP described it as an abuse of office and an attempt to use state resources to advance party interests.

"This is nothing but a subtle way of denying our teachers their rights," the statement read.
"Teachers are public servants, not political tools. Mandating them to attend APC programmes during working hours is a barrier to professionalism, to education, and to free choice. It is intimidation."

LET TEACHERS CHOOSE FREELY"

The party argued that while every citizen has the right to political association, that right must be voluntary and must not be tied to salary, promotion, or job security.

"A teacher who chooses to support APC should do so on his own free will, after school hours. Not under duress, not with threats, and not with pupils left in classrooms," the PDP added.

The party called on the Ogun State Government, the Teaching Service Commission, and relevant unions to immediately put an end to the practice.

CALL FOR NUT, CSOs INTERVENTION

The PDP also urged the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, and civil society organizations to speak up and protect teachers from being used as "political instruments."

"Our children’s future is in the hands of these teachers. They should be in class teaching, not being bussed to political meetings," the statement said.
"Ogun people deserve better. Democracy is about choice, not compulsion."

WHAT TEACHERS ARE SAYING

Some teachers who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity confirmed receiving circulars and WhatsApp messages asking them to attend party programmes.

One teacher in Abeokuta South said:
"We were told attendance would be taken. That’s why many of us go, even when we don’t want to."

PDP’S POSITION AHEAD OF 2027

The PDP said it is raising the alarm early to prevent a repeat of what it called "the use of state machinery to coerce voters" in past elections.

"We will not keep quiet while the rights of workers are trampled upon for political gain. Ogun teachers deserve respect, not intimidation," the party concluded.

As of the time of filing this report, the Ogun State Government and the APC had not responded to the allegations.

Across the 20 Local Government Areas of the state, stories of Adebutu’s continued intervention projects are fueling a grassroots movement positioning him as the preferred candidate for Governor of Ogun State in 2027.

PROJECTS THAT TOUCH EVERYDAY LIFE

While many politicians disappear after elections, stakeholders say Hon. Adebutu chose a different path — staying with the people through direct impact projects.

1. Water: Hundreds of boreholes have been sunk in rural communities, motor parks, and public schools. For many villages that battled water scarcity for years, clean water is now available daily.
2. Power: Several communities have benefited from transformer installations and repairs. Traders, artisans, and cold-room operators say this has revived small businesses that were dying due to poor power supply.
3. Education: The Ladi Adebutu Scholarship Scheme* continues to support indigent students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions. Beneficiaries say the scheme has kept many children in school who would have otherwise dropped out.
4. Healthcare: Free healthcare outreaches, medical supplies, and support for primary health centers have been extended to communities across the state, especially in hard-to-reach areas.

“Most people only remember us during campaigns. But Ladi Adebutu is still here. When our borehole spoiled, his team fixed it. When our children needed school fees, the scholarship came. When our market women needed help, he assisted. That is why we are saying 2027 is payback time.”

A market leader in Sagamu added:
“We are using what he did for us as the reason to support him. He assisted our women in the markets, he empowered our youths, and he did not discriminate. That is the kind of Governor Ogun needs.”

FROM GRASSROOTS TO GOVERNMENT HOUSE

Political observers note that the sustained goodwill is translating into real mobilization. Youth groups, women associations, and community development committees are now organizing sensitization and PVC drives under the banner of _"Payback for Ladi."_

For them, the message is simple: reward consistency, reward service, reward someone who has continued to invest in the people even out of office.

“After Honorable Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu left office, he did not abandon the people,” a youth coordinator said.
“He continued with laudable projects. Now the people are saying we will also continue with him to Oke-Mosan in 2027.”

THE 2027 CONVERSATION

With less than two years to the governorship election, the conversation in markets, campuses, and town halls is shifting. It is no longer just about party. It is about track record.

Supporters argue that Ogun State needs a Governor who already understands the pain points — water, power, education, healthcare, and support for small businesses — and has been addressing them.

As preparations for the 2027 governorship election gather momentum in Ogun State, political stakeholders and grassroots mobilizers are beginning to frame the conversation around home-grown leadership versus imported political structures.

A major talking point dominating discussions across the 20 Local Government Areas is the candidacy of uahaSenator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as "Yayi", who currently represents Ogun West in the Senate but built his political career in Lagos.

“YAYI DID WELL IN LAGOS. LET HIM STAY THERE”

According to several commentators within the state, Ogun deserves a Governor who has “lived, built, and suffered with the people.”

“Senator Yayi represented Alimosho in Lagos for 8 years. He built his political career, business, and structures in Lagos. That’s commendable. Lagos benefited from him,” a political mobilizer from Ijebu told our correspondent.
“But Ogun is not Lagos. We need someone whose heart beats for Ijebu, Egba, Yewa, and Remo 24/7. Not someone who will be running between Abuja, Lagos, and Abeokuta.”

The argument being pushed is simple: “We don’t need a Governor who is learning Ogun on the job. We need one who already knows Ogun.”

TRACK RECORD MISMATCH: “WHAT WORKED IN LAGOS MAY NOT WORK IN OGUN”

Stakeholders also point to what they describe as a mismatch between Lagos challenges and Ogun’s realities.

“Senator Yayi’s achievements are in Lagos - mega city congestion, federal allocations, ports,” another party chieftain noted.
“Ogun’s problems are different: agro-processing, rural roads, industrial power, border security, and youth unemployment in factories.”

They argue that the skillset required to manage Alimosho is different from the one needed to industrialize Ogun and fix farm-to-market roads.

For Ogun to move forward, they say the next Governor must understand 3 key areas:

1. Agriculture - Ogun as the nation’s food basket
2. Manufacturing - Industrial hubs in Agbara, Sagamu, and Ota
3. Local Government Politics - The politics of 20 LGAs and 236 wards

“Let’s not use Ogun as a retirement plan,” one commentator added.

“DON’T LET OGUN BECOME A POLITICAL EXPERIMENT”

There is also growing concern about politicians who switch states in search of power.

“Ogun 2027 is too important for trial and error,”

A youth leader in Remo said.

Questions being asked in town halls include:
1. Where is home? If things get tough in Ogun, will he run back to his Lagos base?
2. Where are his structures? Can he build across 20 LGAs in 2 years, or will he import Lagos boys to run us?
3. Divided loyalty: Will he prioritize Ogun people, or Lagos interests that funded him?

The debate has also moved online, with several slogans trending among pro-Ogun groups:
1. “Yayi, Thank you for Lagos. Ogun has her own.”
