LEADERSHIP ALSO HAPPENS BEHIND THE SCENES.

Some of the people who make great things happen are rarely the people standing behind the microphone.

At Take The Lead Conference 2026, our volunteers gave their time, energy, skills, and attention to the many details that made the conference possible.

At the Team TTL Appreciation Dinner, we formally presented Certificates of Appreciation to members of the volunteer team in recognition of their service and contribution.

For me, this moment mattered.

Conferences are remembered for what happens on the stage, but they are made possible by people working before the doors open, while the programme is running, and long after many participants have gone home.

That, too, is leadership.

Taking responsibility. Serving without needing the spotlight. Doing your part with excellence because the outcome matters.

To every Team TTL 2026 volunteer, thank you for showing up, serving the vision, and helping us build something meaningful.

I celebrate you.

"BUT IT'S STILL WORKING."

Failure gives you reasons to change. Success often gives you reasons not to.

But "working" and "fit for the future" are not the same thing.

"BUT IT'S STILL WORKING."

Few sentences are more dangerous in leadership.

We have been conditioned to associate change with failure.

Sales are falling? Change.
Customers are leaving? Change.
The strategy has collapsed? Change.

But what if nothing is broken?

What if the numbers still look good, customers are still buying, and everyone is still applauding?

That is where leadership gets difficult.

Because failure gives you evidence that something must change.

SUCCESS GIVES YOU REASONS NOT TO.

And sometimes, by the time something stops working, the best time to change it has already passed.

Because "working" and "fit for the future" are not the same thing.

A profitable product can be approaching irrelevance.

A successful strategy can be exhausting its advantage.

A structure can still function while becoming too small for the organisation it carries.

And sometimes, IT IS PEOPLE.

A departmental head can still meet targets while weakening collaboration.

A branch manager can still deliver numbers while building the wrong culture.

A senior executive can still perform today while lacking the capacity for the organisation's next level.

Even in a church or nonprofit, a branch leader can be attracting people while deeper questions of culture, succession and alignment remain unanswered.

PERFORMANCE MATTERS.

BUT PERFORMANCE IS NOT THE ONLY QUESTION.

There is also FUTURE FITNESS.

Ask:

Is this still aligned with where we are going?

Are today's results strengthening the institution or quietly creating tomorrow's problems?

And perhaps the hardest question:

IF I WERE BUILDING THIS ORGANISATION FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS, WOULD I STILL DESIGN IT THIS WAY?

Leadership is not merely responding when yesterday's model finally collapses.

It is recognising when yesterday's advantage is becoming tomorrow's liability.

It is learning to detect EXPIRATION BEFORE FAILURE.

But this is not an argument for changing everything that works.

Constant change is not innovation. Sometimes it is simply instability wearing fashionable clothes.

The discipline is knowing what to protect, what to improve, what to reinvent, and what to retire while it is still successful.

So this week, don't only ask:

"WHAT IS NOT WORKING?"

Ask the harder question:

"WHAT IS STILL WORKING, BUT SHOULD NO LONGER BE TRUSTED WITH OUR FUTURE?"

It is easy to interrogate failure.

Leadership must also interrogate success.

Because sometimes the greatest competitor to your next success is not failure.

IT IS A PREVIOUS SUCCESS THAT STAYED TOO LONG.

Two years later, the message has not changed: growth begins when excuses end, thinking expands, and challenges are confronted with the decision to keep moving forward.
