POWER AND ENERGY FOR FUTURE SUSTAINABILITY
Power and Energy is pivotal to a nation’s economy (specially, a growing economy such as Nigeria). There are various sources of power or energy generation which include petroleum, coal, wind, sunlight (solar), biomass, Hydro etc. Amongst all these, the most commonly explored in Nigeria and sub-Sahara Africa in nineteenth and twentieth century; have been partly coal, hydro and petroleum (crude oil). In fact, over 85% of businesses depend on electricity which come from burning of petroleum products and hydro (water) sources. Whereas petroleum products through direct consumption and exportation, have brought fortune to Nigeria, however it has various deepening effects ranging from global warming, oil spillage in Niger Delta, ethnicity crises, shortage of supply (e.g. Middle East War effect), to Price instability.
On the other hand, hydropower system could have been one of the best option for Nigeria and some part of Africa due to eco-friendliness, abundant water and sites for dam construction. But the problem of lack of maintenance of dam facilities, vandalism, outdated and expired transmission facilities such as overhead cables, inadequate transformers and corruption; have greatly affected the national grid (which explains the reason for the power outage we are currently experiencing in Nigeria).
Furthermore, the best energy and power source for twenty first century is solar. It is the most eco-friendly, it is renewable and it has over 75% future sustainability. Countries such as Canada, Brazil, China, Australia, India and Germany largely explore solar electrification. Several gadgets and appliances are being made and powered by sun's energy (solar). In fact China is currently championing these innovations. They have made solar street lights, solar irons, solar deep freezers, solar CCTV cameras, solar TV sets, solar sewing machines, solar clippers and hair dressers, solar ovens and cooking stoves, solar generators for portable usage and Solar grid ( National electricity supply).
MY DRIVE:
Nigerian government (Federal and State) should divest huge investments into Solar Electricity. There should be conscious efforts in building solar farms across length and breadth of Local communities, state and federal institutions. Government should engage our Trained professionals with proven track records in collaboration with foreign experts; to build solar panels and solar batteries factories in Nigeria. Training should be conducted for a possible manufacturing of Solar gadgets in Nigeria.
THE UNTOLD FORTUNES
There are lots of benefits the country and it's citizens will gain.
One, absolute comprehensive solution to the present conventional epileptic power supply problems.
Two, massive job opportunities for the teamy Nigerian populace.
Three, International recognition of Nigeria as one among committee of nations curbing the problem of global warming.
Four, boost to the nation's economy. Our GDP will rise tremendously because local businesses will be greatly enhanced.
Five, poverty rate will reduce drastically.
