In our last post, we did establish that it is important to understand the business and market you intend to venture into. To achieve this, we established that conducting market research or a survey is key, as this will help to gather relevant information and help us to take make informed decisions.

Today, we shall be considered one of the three easiest steps to conduct market research.

It's a two-way street as it allows you the opportunity to know the kind of potential customers, existing competitors and the market place.

1. DEFINE THE INFORMATION YOU NEED

a.Potential customers: Here, you will be focusing on the customers; who are potential customers? Their gender, family size, the standard of living, demographical location, educational qualification, etc.

b.Existing Customers: There are existing customers in this line of business, it’s important to identify their value; is it the level of service, quality of the product, or prestige attached to the use of the product, again, what informs their buying decision? What website did they visit the most? All these questions help you understand customers who have previously patronized or still patronize the business.

c.As much as knowing existing customers and potential customers is important, we must also understand our competitors; who they are, who is targeting the same market as us, what marketing strategy are they using, and if it is working, how does it operate?

d.Develop strategies: Understand the environment associated with pricing, products, distribution, and promotional channels. Use your research findings to make informed marketing decisions about how to price and distribute your products or services.

e.Prepare for Positioning and Expansion: Research will help you identify areas for positioning and expansion and test the market’s readiness for a new product or service (eg. deciding whether to open a second retail store and choosing the right location).

f. Identify new opportunity: Research will help you identify areas for positioning and expansion as well as support our test of the market’s readiness for a new product or service (eg. deciding whether to open a second retail store and choosing the right location).

This is a major reason why a lot of businesses struggle or fold up, one of which is the absence of proper market research.

The idea of building a corporate brand may appear stressful it is, however, important to pay attention to developing this as it represents the pillars of your company and serves as an instrument that ensures the longevity of value systems.
There are six practices of corporate brand building which should be taken into consideration by companies.

1. BRAND CONTEXT

The position or standing of the brand should be understood by stakeholders ( employer, employee, investor, and by extension customers). This is the value and unique composition of the brand which should be communicated effectively to ensure the desired results.

2. BRAND CONSTRUCTION
This refers to the positioning of the brand in accordance with customer and stakeholder value. Note that the competitive market is a hub of thriving businesses with their value systems hence the need to carefully construct a formidable structure. At this point, authenticity is key as well as the understanding of the needs of customers and stakeholders to better inform your company decision making.

3. BRAND CONFIRMATION
Every value system or great idea needs a voice and a communication tool to better transmit and communicate its intentions. Every brand should have a unique voice and method of delivering its intentions, products, and services to stakeholders and customers respectively. This is seen as a way to seek and seal endorsement in the hearts of customers. Remember, people and the value you create are your greatest publishers.
