In a world where the world is revolutionizing and everything is changing, our nursery education is stuck in a time warp. This is our harsh reality. Children are being forced to mindlessly memorise what doesn’t serve them in the short term and going to school is nightmare for those who struggle!
Our young ones are being forced into a mold, suffocating their creativity and curiosity through our methods and approaches to educating them. We are so caught up in trying to ensure that they get good grades and forget the real essense of teaching, learning, and schooling.
Permit me to remind us that schooling is meant to educate not really to ‘ram’ down information that doesn’t mean any thing to them. Children are more interested in getting good grades than actually learning. Teachers are all so tensed because they need to meet the expectations of the school and parents through good grades hence forget to enjoy the process of watching or rather participating in witnessing the transformation of these children under their care from not knowing to knowing. What an irony! I have witnessed the sad scene of 4-year-olds reciting the alphabet like robots, without understanding its significance or being allowed to explore its creative possibilities. The God-given spark in their eyes, gradually dwindling, replaced by a monotony that would haunt them for years to come.
I’ve seen teachers encourage children in to write 1 - 1000 in preschool for no just cause! And this, by the way is attributed to intelligence and to be quite honest, impressive to the parents and school administrators. I have also seen parents who complain that their children cannot write by the age of 2. Yet, these same children have no idea on how to regulate emotions, are socially inadequate, experience anxiety traits that our teachers cannot see because they are busy worrying about great grades. Hmm!
As I delved deeper in wonder, I see a system that prioritize standardized testing over social-emotional learning. Children are being scolded for expressing their emotions, rather than being taught healthy ways to manage and express their feelings. The lack of empathy and self-awareness is staggering, setting them up for a lifetime of struggles. Do you want to know what the sad part of this story is? The teachers don’t even know how to detect when something doesn’t feel right. Some of us cannot discern when a child has dyslexia and is has a fear of books or reading or just being outright stubborn.
But then, I discovered a glimmer of hope.
