Let us talk about something barely talked about aloud but which exists, especially in research studies:

👉🏽 Supervisor/Advisor Frictions.

Sometimes in research work, the human relationship element also plays a key role.
The truth is, most researchers experience a tensed supervisor-advisor relationship at some point.

From:
1). Misaligned expectations: when your supervisor imagines faster drafts, deeper analysis, or more polished writing than you can realistically deliver within your current strength.

2). Delayed feedback: when you have poured energy into a chapter or proposal but wait weeks (or months) for comments that you desperately need to move forward.

To:

3). Micromanagement: when every tiny step is questioned, leaving you second-guessing your competence and progress.

These frictions can be demoralising, draining, and sometimes stall progress more than the actual research challenges.

To ease some of it, you can consider:

👉1). Agreeing on timelines and roles early on and upfront.

👉2). Communicating more often eg sending polite reminders instead of waiting in silence.

👉3). Negotiating timelines eg asking for realistic feedback windows.

👉4). Last but not least, learning how to respectfully protect your voice, eg, accept critique, but don’t lose confidence in your work.

When your dissertation lands on an examiner’s desk, they’re quietly scanning for 3 things above everything else:

1.) Evidence of critical synthesis, not summary.

Anyone can summarise existing literature, but what examiners want to see is how you connect, contrast, and critique sources. Are you weaving arguments together, or just retelling what others have said?

2.) A clear line of argument, from intro to conclusion

Your dissertation isn’t just a collection of chapters; it is a story. Examiners love when your work feels like one long, coherent conversation, where every chapter flows into the next.
Does your conclusion naturally grow from your research questions, methodology, and findings?

3.) Consistency in referencing.

Planning a Research Agenda for 2025

Whatever personal or professional goals you've had planned out for next year, here is how to ensure you stay on top of those ones that include academic goals:

1. Be clear on what those goals are

What exactly are your academic or research dreams for next year?
To apply to an international school or scholarship offer? Enrol for an online degree program or course? Make better progress with an existing thesis chapter? Finally get that research published in a journal? Get on with a data collection and analysis exercise?...

The first step is to ensure clarity. Write those down so you have a direction/focus.

2. Create a 'Getting It Done' strategy

Your next step will then be to write down the steps you will have to take to achieving those goal(s) in point number (1).
If one of such steps (actions/strategies) involve seeking funds, identify your viable potential funding sources and map out ways you hope to employ to utilize those channels.
