Military Aircraft Crashes in Nigeria: 10 Incidents in Five Years Raise Fresh Safety Concerns
Nigeria has recorded at least 10 military aircraft crashes between 2021 and October 2026, with at least 68 confirmed and presumed fatalities, raising fresh concerns about the safety and operational readiness of the country’s military aviation fleet.
The incidents involved fighter jets, helicopters, training aircraft, transport planes and unmanned aerial vehicles.
They occurred during combat operations, training exercises, routine missions, casualty evacuation and other operational activities.
The latest incident occurred on Monday when a Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft, NAF 931, crashed in the Igbokoda area of Ilaje Local Government Area, Ondo State.
The aircraft was reportedly on a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos when contact was lost at about 9:13 a.m.
The Nigerian Air Force later confirmed that all 25 people on board, which comprises of 20 passengers and five crew members lost their lives.
The latest crash has renewed questions about military aviation safety, particularly aircraft maintenance, airworthiness, operational procedures, safety monitoring and accident investigation.
For security organisations and other critical sectors, the incidents also reinforce a wider lesson: effective security is not only about responding to threats—it is about identifying risks, strengthening preventive systems and ensuring that safety procedures are consistently followed before disaster occurs.
At Oscar Newman Security Concept, we believe proactive risk assessment, safety awareness, emergency preparedness and effective response systems remain essential to protecting lives, assets and critical operations.
