Staying Safe on Nigerian Highways: What Every Road Traveler Should Know

With rising insecurities across Nigeria’s highways, every road trip must now come with a plan, not just fuel and snacks.

Here’s what to watch out for, how to stay safe, and what to do if things feel “off” on the road. Please read and share. It could save a life. 🙏🏽

These days in Nigeria, traveling by road is no longer just about beating traffic or getting to your destination on time. It’s about staying alive. That sounds harsh, but it’s the truth.

With the increasing reports of kidnappings, robberies, and sudden attacks on major highways like Kaduna-Abuja, Benin-Ore, and Enugu-Onitsha roads, road safety isn’t just about seatbelts and speed limits anymore. It’s about survival.

So before you hit the road again, here are a few non-negotiables you should know.

1. Avoid Night Travel (Seriously)
This is the golden rule. Most attacks happen between 6PM and 6AM, when visibility is poor and help is far away. No matter how urgent the journey is, reschedule. The road is nobody’s friend at night.

2. Be Mindful of Checkpoints
There are legit checkpoints, and there are suspicious ones.
Here’s how to tell the difference:
• Authentic checkpoints usually involve uniformed personnel with marked vehicles and proper ID.
• Suspicious ones may involve makeshift barriers, unprofessional behavior, or strange locations—especially deep inside rural or forested areas.

If something feels “off,” slow down but don’t stop abruptly. Keep your doors locked. Look around… are there other vehicles being stopped? If you feel unsafe, reverse calmly if you can or drive slowly past while calling emergency numbers.

3. Share Your Trip Details
Always let someone know:
• Your departure time
• Your route
• Who you’re traveling with
• The name of your driver (if it’s public transport)
• Your expected arrival time

Apps like Google Maps allow you to share your live location. Use it. It might feel extra, but safety has no pride.

4. Don’t Overshare with Strangers
Yes, you can be friendly without giving too much away.
If you’re using public transport, don’t mention how much you have on you, where exactly you’re headed, or who you’re meeting.

Criminals often pose as fellow passengers. It’s okay to trust your instincts and keep to yourself.

5. Know the Red Flags
Stay alert for:
• Sudden roadblocks in isolated areas
• False breakdowns where people flag you down for “help”
• Drivers or co-passengers making calls that seem coded or anxious
• Unusual U-turns or diversions into forested or less-traveled roads

If your driver insists on taking a strange route, speak up immediately and make a call (loudly if necessary) to imply someone is tracking you.

6. What To Do If You’re in Danger
• Stay calm. Panic clouds judgment.
• Call for help immediately. Have numbers like:
• Police Emergency: 112 or 199
• Your state security command contacts (save these before travel)
• Drop a pin/location if you’re able to share live updates.
• If stopped and threatened, don’t argue. Your life is more important than your belongings.
• Play along if forced into a hostage/kidnap situation. Observe. Listen. Stay alert for anything that can help you escape or report later.

7. Travel in Groups When Possible
Convoys are harder to target than single cars. If you must drive, link up with others heading in your direction—especially on highways with poor security records.

8. Use Reputable Transport Companies
Don’t just enter any bus on the roadside. Reputable companies:
• Have registered drivers
• Maintain manifest records
• Offer trip monitoring support

It might be more expensive, but it’s worth the peace of mind.

9. Pack Light but Smart
Beyond your essentials, keep:
• A fully charged power bank
• A small flashlight
• Pepper spray or whistle (if legal in your area)
• Extra cash hidden in different places
• Photocopies of your ID (not the originals)

10. Finally, Pray… But Prepare Too
Faith is powerful, but so is wisdom. Nigeria is going through a tough time, and no one is exempt. Let’s look out for ourselves and each other.

Please share this with someone who’s planning a road trip soon. Your share might be the reason someone gets home safe.

Stay safe. Be alert. Come back home. Always.

The 3 Levels of Security We Offer And Who Needs What

Not all security needs are the same and we understand that.

Some clients want visible authority at the gate. Others need subtle, watchful eyes blending into the background. Some need armed guards; some just need someone to keep records and ensure order.

That’s why at Heroes Protection Systems Ltd., we don’t offer a one-size-fits-all solution.

We listen. We assess. Then we recommend one of our three trusted levels of service:

✅️Basic Guarding Service

This is ideal for small businesses, homes, and retail stores that just need general monitoring and a calm presence to deter trouble.

Our guards in this category are well-trained in access control, visitor management, and basic patrols. It's affordable, effective, and reliable.

✅️Advanced Security Package

This is where things get more specialized. If you run a warehouse, a school, a religious center, or you handle large cash or assets, you need more than presence.

This package includes trained guards with knowledge of surveillance systems, conflict resolution, report writing, and quick response coordination.

✅️Premium Executive Protection

Reserved for high-risk individuals, VIPs, events, and sensitive facilities. This level includes armed security (where licensed and required), real-time intelligence updates, convoy protection, and strategic deployment.

We provide the kind of silence and precision that says “you’re safe” without words.

So before you ask for “just one security man,” pause and ask yourself:

What exactly do I want protected… and what’s the best way to do it?

We're here to help you figure it out, no pressure, just professional advice and services you can count on.

And because growth is a daily practice here at Heroes, attached is a picture of some of our guards during an in-house training session.

That’s the level of excellence we’re committed to.

📞 Let’s talk security that fits you. Not just any kind, "the right kind."

Top 5 Mistakes Businesses Make When Setting Up Security Systems

Let’s be honest, no one ever plans to be the victim of a break-in or security breach. But when it happens, the first question is usually: “What went wrong?”

At Heroes Protection Systems Ltd., we’ve worked with countless businesses, and one thing we’ve seen over and over again is this: many of the issues they face could have been avoided with better planning.

So, here are 5 common mistakes we want to help you avoid:

1. Prioritizing cost over quality
Yes, everyone has a budget. But going for the cheapest option often means sacrificing reliability. A poorly installed or outdated system can cost you more in the long run.

2. Ignoring the need for trained security personnel
Technology is great, but it can’t replace the human instinct of a well-trained guard. You need both smart tools and smarter people.

3. One-size-fits-all security plans
Your business is unique. So why settle for a generic security plan? A custom solution tailored to your location, hours, and risk level is always more effective.

4. No routine maintenance or upgrades
Security systems age just like phones and computers. If you haven’t updated yours in years, it might be time. Regular checks ensure your system works when it’s needed most.

5. No staff training or internal awareness
What happens when your staff doesn’t know what to do in an emergency? Even the best system will fail if people don’t understand how to use it or react properly.

Final Thoughts:
Security isn’t just about having cameras and alarms... it’s about making smart, informed decisions. At Heroes Protection Systems Ltd., we help businesses get it right from day one.

Let’s help you build a system that works not just one that exists.

FAQs:

1. Do I really need both guards and a security system?
Yes. Combining trained personnel with tech solutions ensures stronger surveillance, faster response, and better protection overall.

2. Can you inspect or upgrade an existing system installed by another company?
Absolutely. We offer security audits and can recommend upgrades or improvements even if we didn’t install your current system.

3. How often should I review or update my security plan?
At least once a year. It’s also important to reassess anytime your business expands, relocates, or sees changes in operations.

4. Do you offer custom security plans for small businesses?
Yes, we work with all business sizes. Whether you run a shop or a large facility, we’ll create a plan that fits your unique needs.

5. What’s your response time in case of a breach?
We pride ourselves on prompt response. Our protocols ensure immediate alerting and swift action from our trained team or linked authorities.

How to Spot a Fake Security Guard: Red Flags to Watch Out For

In today’s world, private security plays a critical role in personal safety and asset protection. Unfortunately, this has led to a rise in unlicensed, untrained, or even outright fake security guards infiltrating the industry and yes, some look the part but can't do the job.

As a client or organization, knowing how to spot a fake guard could save you from preventable risks.

Here are some warning signs to help you tell the real professionals from the imposters:

1. No Proper Identification or Licensing
A genuine security guard should be able to show you verifiable identification and licensing. If they can’t, won’t, or avoid the topic altogether, that’s a major red flag.

2. Poor Dress Code or Sloppy Appearance
While a uniform doesn't make a professional, trained guards take pride in appearance. Torn shirts, mismatched accessories, or inconsistent branding may suggest something’s not right.

3. No Knowledge of Basic Security Protocols
Ask simple questions: What’s your procedure during an emergency? How do you handle suspicious behavior? If they fumble, they’re either poorly trained or faking it altogether.

4. Lack of Physical or Situational Awareness
Professional guards are alert. Always. If someone is constantly distracted, on their phone, or has no idea what’s happening in their environment, they’re not the real deal.

5. No Affiliation With a Recognized Security Company
Fake guards often work solo or claim to represent companies that don’t exist. Always do a background check on the firm they say they represent.

Why This Matters
As a company committed to raising the standard in private security, we at Heroes Protection Systems Ltd. believe the quality of your guard should match the value of what you’re protecting. Fake guards put lives and assets at risk. You deserve better.

Let’s help you secure your space with the right people, doing the right job, the right way.

FAQs:

1. How can I verify if a security guard is licensed?
You can ask to see their security license or registration and cross-check it with the appropriate state security authority or body.

2. What should I look for when hiring a security company?
Look out for experience, licensing, a strong reputation, quality training programs, and professional communication.

3. Can fake guards be prosecuted?
Yes. Impersonating licensed personnel is a punishable offense under Nigerian law and in most jurisdictions globally.

4. Do real security guards undergo formal training?
Absolutely. At Heroes Protection Systems Ltd, our guards are trained in first aid, crisis response, conflict resolution, and basic legal knowledge.

5. What’s the safest way to hire professional guards?
Work directly with verified companies like ours. We take full responsibility for every personnel we deploy and ensure their integrity and professionalism.

5 Ways Security Guards Prevent Crime Before It Happens

When we think of security guards, our minds often go to emergencies. Break-ins, alarms blaring, and last-minute responses.

But the truth is, great security isn’t just about reacting. It’s about preventing. It’s about reading the room long before trouble enters it.

That’s where trained security guards come in... they’re not just uniforms at the gate. They’re a wall between safety and chaos.

At Heroes Protection Systems, this is what we do daily across Nigeria. We stay ready so nothing catches you off guard. Here are five subtle but powerful ways our guards prevent crime before it even happens.

1. Visible Presence That Deters Trouble

Sometimes, the presence of a uniformed officer is enough to make a potential offender rethink. It’s psychological, people think twice when they know someone is watching. Our guards are trained to maintain a calm but firm presence that sends a clear message: “This space is secure.”

2. Smart Surveillance and Patrolling

Our guards don’t just sit in a booth. They observe. They walk. They take note of every unusual pattern...vehicles parked too long, unfamiliar faces, or repeated movement in restricted zones. These aren’t just patrols, they’re strategic checks that nip suspicious activity in the bud.

3. Access Control That Closes the Gaps

Who comes in and out of your facility matters. Guards stationed at entrances verify identity, log visits, and make sure no one slips through unnoticed. By monitoring access, we control the narrative and reduce the risk of internal and external threats.

4. Communication That Keeps Everyone Alert

One of our strengths at Heroes Protection Systems is team coordination. Our guards are equipped with communication tools to stay in touch, share observations, and escalate issues quickly. That speed of communication ensures no warning sign is missed.

5. Intuition That Comes from Experience

This is the part many people underestimate, experience sharpens instincts. Our trained guards know what trouble "feels" like. They can spot agitation, suspicious body language, or unusual behavior. That sixth sense, combined with training, is what keeps you safe even when you don’t know there’s a threat.

FAQs:

1. What makes trained guards better at preventing crime?
Trained guards have the skills to observe, assess, and act quickly. They understand how to defuse situations before they escalate and are equipped with both physical and mental tools to protect lives and property.

2. Can security guards really prevent theft or break-ins?
Yes, their presence alone deters most opportunistic crimes. Through access control, surveillance, and vigilance, they reduce vulnerabilities significantly.

3. Do security guards receive training in de-escalation?
Absolutely. At Heroes Protection Systems, we prioritize de-escalation training. Our guards know how to handle tense situations calmly, reducing the likelihood of violence or panic.

4. How do I know if my property needs a security guard?
If you manage a facility, estate, office, or even a private residence with valuable assets or frequent foot traffic, then yes...you need professional security. Prevention is always more cost-effective than response.

5. What areas in Nigeria do you cover?
We provide top-tier security services across all 36 states in Nigeria. Whether you’re in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, or a smaller town, our team is ready to serve and protect.

At Heroes Protection Systems Ltd., we don’t just wear uniforms, we embody vigilance. From residential areas to corporate facilities, our goal is simple: to stop crime before it even begins.
