COOPERATIVE ARBITRATION.

The gross ignorance of cooperative practice is alarming, cutting across a wide range of people and professionals - lawyers, accountants, and bankers, among others. It was indeed a funny and unbelievable situation: a lawyer ordered me to give him my professional books - cooperative textbooks, journals, acts, laws, and documents - for him to go through; and that I should also guide him to enable him defend his client - a cooperative society - in court. He repeated his request with authority and a high sense of entitlement.

Composed and well- articulated, I asked him if it was the same manner I had requested his professional books and textbooks. I asked him why he thought his profession should be recognized, protected, and respected, and mine should be different. I reminded him that he was not trained in cooperative legislation and practice.

Shocked, he looked at me sheepishly, then smiled and responded calmly: "Oga, man must survive in this country... I'm hustling". I asked him about the implications of his hustles on the lives of innocent cooperative members who engage lawyers ignorantly on issues related to cooperative arbitration. He then questioned me tactfully: "Sir, are you saying that whenever I'm offered a job by a cooperative, I should turn it down?"

I sensed his reluctance in his tone. "You should tell cooperative members the truth, that it's not your field of study, and as such, you can't handle it," I answered him with confidence. He shook his head in shame. "This is a technical field of study and a career. It's not for every Tom, Dick, and Harry."

Then I advised him that if he was interested in the cooperative profession, he should first study Cooperative, Economics, and Management (CEM), and then register with the Institute of Cooperative Professionals of Nigeria (ICOPRON) to write exams and attend continuous trainings, grow through various statuses, to enable him qualify to arbitrate on cooperative cases.

Thereafter, guess what happened? We became good friends, and he directs cooperatives to me for their professional services!

There are more to cooperatives than being a group of people.

By Badejo Adeyẹmi

In a landmark event for the advancement of Nigeria’s cooperative movement, the Institute of Cooperative Professionals of Nigeria (ICOPRON) successfully hosted its 9th National Conference at Crispan Suites and Events Centre, Jos, Plateau State, from November 4–8, 2025.

The five-day conference, themed “Unlocking Opportunities in Cooperatives to Build a Stronger and More Effective National Economy,” brought together key stakeholders, practitioners, and policymakers from across Nigeria, including delegates from Ogun, Lagos, Oyo, Bauchi, Imo, Benue, Kano, Kaduna, Osun, Enugu, Anambra, Abuja, and Plateau States, among others. The event served as a hub for knowledge exchange, professional networking, and strategic discussions on cooperative reform and sustainability.

Declaring the conference open, the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang, represented by Hon. Mohammed Nyalun, Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, expressed the administration’s unwavering commitment to economic empowerment, commerce, and industrial growth as vital components of Plateau’s development agenda.

Governor Mutfwang commended cooperatives for their unifying power and their role in empowering citizens through collective ownership, resource pooling, and risk-sharing. He emphasized that cooperatives remain a vital mechanism for promoting inclusive growth, poverty reduction, and grassroots development in Nigeria.

He urged cooperative professionals to reflect on achievements and challenges within the sector and develop actionable policy recommendations that will drive national economic transformation.

The Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Senator (Dr.) Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, CON, represented by Hon. Victor Oyegoke, delivered an inspiring address aligning the conference theme with the Renewed Hope Cooperative Reform and Revamp Programme (RH-CRRP), a key initiative under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He highlighted the federal government’s strategic commitment to repositioning cooperatives as engines of inclusive economic growth, rural development, and financial inclusion.

Key components of the programme include:

Establishment of a National Cooperative Smart Registry to digitalize cooperative registration;

Establishment of a Renewed Hope Cooperative Relief Fund and Cooperative Bank of Nigeria;

Capacity building and institutional revitalization for cooperative bodies nationwide.

Sen. Abdullahi commended ICOPRON for its “unwavering commitment to capacity building, professional ethics, and good governance,” noting that ICOPRON’s role as a key implementing partner of the RH-CRRP demonstrates the government’s trust in its expertise and leadership.

In her goodwill message, the newly elected President of the Cooperative Federation of Nigeria (CFN), Mrs. Hannatu Mershak, congratulated the leadership of ICOPRON for their consistency and impact. She noted that the conference marked her first official outing since her election two weeks prior and lauded ICOPRON for advancing cooperative professionalism in Nigeria.

Delivering his keynote address, Dr. Olubunmi Adebayo Fajobi, FICP, mni, National President of ICOPRON, expressed profound joy over the Institute’s steady progress and consistency in holding its annual conference every first full week of November.

He further disclosed that ICOPRON is at the final stage of attaining a Chartered status, a development that will legally institutionalize the Institute as the governing body for cooperative professionals in Nigeria.

Dr. Fajobi reaffirmed the Institute’s commitment to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and the promotion of ethical standards within cooperative practice. He emphasized collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to advance reforms, improve data management, and establish a National Cooperative Development Centre (NACODEV) at Sheda, Abuja.

*STOP BEING DECEIVED !*

Many individuals are parading themselves as cooperative professionals, deceiving unsuspecting cooperative members, and ripping them off large sums of money. They call themselves cooperative experts, representatives, and leaders, misleading and teaching people what they do not understand and not trained in, to mention a few.

These quacks are destroying the cooperative sub-sector of the Nigerian economy, and giving it a bad name! They are those who tell people that some rich and influencial persons outside Nigeria want to help the cooperative organisations in Nigeria.Or that they representing your Cooperatives' interest in Presidency, CBN, NNPC, PHCN and so on. Therefore, cooperatives must pay, or buy a special form from them at exhorbitant amount of money ! Similarly,they create all sort dubious contributory schemes, calling them Cooperatives to further rip the Cooperative!

They are anxious to present papers on cooperative. One wonders what an ignorant person will teach! One of my numerous experiences:a cooperative member was brought outside Abuja FCT to present a paper on Cooperative. He was billed to take on the first paper, but objected when he learned a cooperative professional was around. I insisted he should take his paper. My client began begging and apologizing for their mistake! When I finished, he was the first person to salute me.

When it was time for his presentation, all he kept saying in his paper was that:" Infact, the professional had already touched on it...". Imagine this: unfortunately, many cooperatives are paying quacks heavily to fool them!

Do not be deceived: activism and trade unionism are not cooperative practice. Thus, anyone who uses these guises is a criminal who should be apprehended ! When next your cooperative wants attend a cooperative trainings, or engages anyone for cooperative registrations, trainings, arbitration, and auditing, among other cooperative professional services, endeavour to find out their legitimacy, experience, and competency - to ensure that you are in safe hands!

The Institute of Cooperative Professionals of Nigeria (ICOPRON) keeps register of all cooperative professionals in Nigeria, and qualified members to provide specialized and professional cooperative services for cooperatives to become effective, and devoid of underdevelopment, collapse, and litigation.
