At the 50th Middle East Energy 2026 Leadership Summit in Dubai, Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, highlighted how the Electricity Act 2023 ended Nigeria’s federal monopoly and opened the door to 37 emerging electricity markets across the country

He stressed that energy security is no longer just about oil and gas. It is about reliable grids, investment, critical minerals, strong institutions and regulatory certainty, but just as importantly, it is about affordability. Energy poverty, he noted, constrains productivity, public confidence and national resilience, making the price of power a security issue in its own right.

That is why Nigeria’s reform agenda ensures that as the sector opens to investment, power is not priced out of reach of the people who need it most.

The Minister set out diversification, not disengagement, as the surest form of strategic insurance, and called for the nation’s grid to be treated with the same seriousness historically reserved for fuel supply.

“Nigeria has chosen to build. Africa has chosen to build,” the Minister told delegates, inviting global partners to build with the country, under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.

Today, the Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe engaged industrial operators on the 132kV Ikorodu–Sagamu corridor, assuring them of the government’s commitment to sustained electricity supply in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He issued a firm warning against energy theft, meter tampering, and other practices that undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s power system.

This followed troubling discrepancies between electricity supplied and energy accounted for on the corridor, with losses reaching as high as 100MW and an estimated ₦120 billion lost in one year, revealed through NISO’s monitoring systems.

We must know where the power is going and what is compromising it. The Minister directed all stakeholders to collaborate toward a transparent, scientific, and fair investigation.

The Minister was joined at the engagement by the MD/CEO and Executive Directors of NISO, representatives of TCN, and the Managing Directors of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electric.

We launched the Renewable Asset Management Company (RAMCO) in Abuja, a new institution built to professionalise how we manage Nigeria’s power infrastructure and end the cycle of assets declining after commissioning.

For too long, we’ve measured success by ribbon-cuttings. RAMCO changes that. It is centred on stewardship, governance discipline and measurable performance, protecting what we’ve built, optimising what we already own, and ensuring every naira invested in energy infrastructure produces sustained service for Nigerians.

Our ambition is bigger than ending darkness. It is to use electricity to build prosperity, to make Nigeria competitive for manufacturing, power the next generation of digital infrastructure, provide reliable electricity to our hospitals, modernise agriculture, and expand opportunity in rural communities.

After the commissioning of the upgraded substations at Ijorq and Apapa road yesterday, we commissioned an upgraded transmission infrastructure at Alausa and Lekki, adding a combined 272MW of bulk power capacity to two critical economic corridors.

At Alausa, a new 100MVA transformer increases capacity to 205MVA, adding 80MW. At Lekki, two 60MVA transformers and nine new feeders raise capacity to 240MVA, adding about 192MW.

This is our approach to fixing Nigeria’s power sector: identify the bottleneck, invest in it, remove the constraint, and unlock capacity.

We remain committed to confronting infrastructure constraints, strengthening grid stability, and delivering more reliable electricity to Nigerians.

Today, we commissioned upgraded transmission substations at Ijora and Apapa Road in Lagos, adding 208MW of bulk transmission capacity to one of Nigeria’s most economically vital corridors.

At Ijora, two new 100MVA transformers increased capacity from 90MVA to 230MVA, while the new Gas Insulated Substation at Apapa raised capacity from 60MVA to 180MVA.

These projects demonstrate President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s fearless commitment to addressing the structural constraints holding our economy back and strengthening the power sector as we work toward building a $1 trillion economy.

I commend TCN, JICA, the World Bank, the Government of Japan, Lagos State Government and all stakeholders for making these critical upgrades possible.

We will continue to reinforce Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure, close the gap between generation and evacuation capacity, and deliver a more stable power supply for Nigerians and businesses.

Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, welcomed Chinese Ambassador H.E. Yu Dunhai and urged Nigerian exporters to act fast, noting bilateral trade has already hit $18 billion in H1 2026. Ambassador Yu cited an 80% rise in Nigerian exports this year, with private exporters like Atlantic Shrimpers already export-ready.

The Honourable Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) in Abuja, urging members to ensure every decision is guided by how it improves the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Nigerians. The ceremony was attended by the Permanent Secretary, Board Chairman His Excellency Mr. Ayodele Fayose, REA's Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Board members and Ministry management.

Tegbe described the Board's constitution as consistent with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's drive to strengthen governance and accountability across public institutions, and called REA an institution for expanding opportunity: every mini-grid, solar home system and electrified market, school, health centre or farm, he said, represents an investment in human capital and economic inclusion. He pointed to REA's existing programmes, the Energizing Education, Economies and Agriculture Programmes and the Africa Mini-Grids Programme, as evidence of that strategy at work, and noted that the Board, constituted under Section 130 of the Electricity Act, takes office at a defining moment for the Agency.

Responding for the Board, Chairman Fayose described President Tinubu's decision to appoint Tegbe as a statement of seriousness rather than a routine appointment, a signal that the administration would settle for nothing less than a lasting solution to Nigeria's power problem. He called the Minister a technocrat whose technical depth and managerial competence have already produced a positive turning point for the sector, and affirmed that REA's leadership was proud to work with him on that effort.
