Africa is not a mood board.
Sometimes, in an effort to make something look African, we lean on the same familiar patterns, colours, symbols and visual cues. And without meaning to, we can end up telling a story that feels more like a stereotype than the reality of the people it represents.
African identity is rich, diverse and constantly evolving. It lives in our traditions, but also in our cities, our creativity, our everyday lives and the many ways we see the world.
There is beauty in our cultural expressions, but no single aesthetic can capture all that we are.
Perhaps the question isn't just, “Does this look African?” but, “Does this truly reflect the Africa we are trying to tell a story about?”
At Teo-Inspiro, we believe meaningful storytelling begins with understanding the people, places and perspectives behind the image.
