DEMOCRACY PROMISES MERIT...

Hey guys, , a good day to think beyond the surface.

Like I stated above, in theory, democracy makes a powerful promise...

That, the best and the best should win.

But in reality, politics doesn’t operate on merit alone.

It rewards organisation...

> Organisation of people;

> Organisation of ; and

> Organisation of .

This is the gap many good candidates ignore.

A candidate may be brilliant and credible but without structure, coordination, and strategic alliances, he will struggle to translate his credentials into electoral victory.

While another candidate, who has less credentials but with a well-organised system can outperform, maneuver, and ultimately win in an election.

So when we ask...

“Why do the best candidates lose?”
We may be asking the wrong question.

A better question should be...

“Who built the strongest, most aligned system around their ambitions?”

This is because democracy gives everyone a chance but politics rewards those who understand how to convert that chance into coordinated power.

Therefore, if we want better outcomes in Nigeria, we must stop romanticising merit and start paying closer attention to organisation, incentives, and structure.

Each sector struggles for a different reason and creates impact for a different one.

institutions often struggle with speed. The mandate is expansive, accountability is complex, and decision cycles are long.

often struggle with sustainability. The mission is compelling, but funding models and donor timelines frequently shape strategy.

often struggle with focus. Momentum is high, is constant, yet priorities shift faster than systems can stabilize.

When these sectors perform at their best, however, the strengths are unmistakable:

Government delivers scale;

Nonprofits build trust; and

Startups generate momentum.

The most durable impact I’ve seen has emerged when these strengths are intentionally aligned; through clear roles, shared incentives, and thoughtful coordination.
