6 Top Reasons Why People keep Failing in Poultry...

If you’re a poultry farmer or planning to go into the poultry industry and you have been having challenges then here are some tips for you.

1. People tend to rear the wrong bird at the wrong season which makes them not to do well. Eg.

Trying to rear turkeys during the deep-in rainy season, you’re almost going to lose your entire money.

Or let’s say you try to rear broilers off-season like May without having any hot post rearing plans. This will frustrate you in the long run and likely kick you out of the poultry thing.

2. Using the wrong medication for the wrong purpose or for the wrong ailment. This is a no brainer and wrong step to take, There are proven ways to avoid this.

3. Not Completing the necessary vaccinations from early days of rearing.

Learn the vaccination routine from an expert as it’s very necessary.

4. Buying a very bad specie of birds, in this case no matter what you do, you will end up losing. It's as good as putting your hard earned money in a leaking pocket.

5. Consulting A wrong consultant that don't care about your business success but interested in filling their pocket with your hard earned money by taking advantage of you.

No one can be blamed for this because those consultants are very c***y and anyone could fall for them. There are things to watch out for.

6. Poor handling and poor nurturing.

Let's say you fail to provide enough heat when the weather is close to ice-cold or you provided excess heat when the weather is already red hot. These factors count too and should be taken note of likewise.

Good evening dear friend, hope your day was lovely?

Do you know you can always make extra money from waste manure by selling them to farmers to use as fertilizers for their farm?

You can sell each of this big bag for the rate of ₦1,500-₦2,000.

Imagine selling about 100. That's about ₦150k-₦200k in passive income.

CONTINUED FROM MONDAY.

First of all, Sorry for omitting the continuation of our CRD tips yesterday. As said on Monday we will be talking about the treatment and Prevention.

TREATMENT.

There are antibiotics that can help to control the disease but reducing stress is an essential component to managing the disease once it is in the flock. Some include Anti-CRD, Tylosin, Enrofloxacin, Terramycin, Tylodox, BIO-TILMICONSIN.

Just do well to read dosage on drug pack before administration to birds.

PREVENTION.

BIRDS that are vaccinated against CRD are available from suppliers - make sure you ask about the vaccination status of the birds you acquire them.

Management issues must be addressed before the birds arrive. Ensure birds are free of M. Gallisepticum on introduction. An all-in, all-out system with thorough cleaning down between batches and acquiring vaccinated birds helps. Ensure the nutrition and flock dynamics (size, age distribution, presence of roosters etc) are also optimal.

Housing that is difficult to clean and thus accumulates manure, dust and vermin leads to many common ailments in poultry.

Chronic Respiratory Disease (CRD).

CRD is one of the most common causes of disease in backyard fowls mostly now that we are in the harmattan and everywhere seems dusty with dry air all over.

Chronic respiratory disease (CRD) occurs when chickens and turkeys that are infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum are stressed.

The bacteria then causes major damage to the bird's respiratory system.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum spreads via eggs, airborne transmission and indirect or mechanical routes such as introducing infected birds to an existing flock, or via bird transport containers.

M. Gallisepticum can reside in a flock with few indications of its presence until the flock or individuals in it are stressed sufficiently to show signs of respiratory disease.

SIGNS OF CRD.

The signs of CRD are sniffling, sneezing, coughing and other signs of respiratory distress. When suspected, observe the birds from a distance to get a good idea of the symptoms as birds often do not display signs of disease once caught.

Sometimes CRD slowly spreads through the flock causing poor production, re****ed growth and wet noses.

In these cases there are usually few mortalities unless the underlying stressors increase.

Similar Diseases

Other diseases that have similar clinical signs like CRD are Coryza, Infectious bronchitis, Infectious laryngotracheitis and Fowl cholera.

Stay tuned, tomorrow we will discuss about the preventive measures and also how CRD can be treated. 👋🏼🙂

To Continue from our last post of yesterday, below are great ways to control Mites and lice in your birds.

✔️Clean coops regularly, disposing of loose feathers that can carry hatching eggs (nits).

✔️ Limit visits from fellow poultry-keepers who can transport the creepy crawlies on their clothes, footwear or equipment, (vehicles, shared farm equipment, etc.).

✔️Secure chicken feed to prevent parasite and disease-carrying wildlife from visiting regularly.

✔️Always quarantine new birds properly before introducing them to an existing flock.

✔️Provide adequate dusting areas for chickens to care for their own skin and feathers naturally.

We hope you adhere them. 😁
