In my sister’s husband’s village, there is a tradition every new bride must obey and when my sister heard it, she swore never to go through with it.
“Sis, I've heard you and I will keep that at the back of my palm, please just tell me what the tradition is let’s see how we can handle it,” I said softly.
She broke down in tears.
“He said every new bride must slēēp with the deity of their land…” she said, her voice shaking.
“What? God forbid! That will never happen!” I interrupted immediately.
“Stella, you can see my situation. My husband said the tradition must be observed, or our marriage will be nullified…” she cried.
“Sis, calm down. You are not going to succumb to this bārbaric act, never. This is taking advantage of you, and it’s wrong. Just because you’re married to him doesn’t mean you lose your rights. It’s not happening,” I said firmly.
“Stella, what do I do? How do I move forward? My marriage is just two weeks old and I’m already facing this kind of problem. Did I make a mistake marrying him?” she wailed.
I pulled her into a tight embrace, wiping her tears as mine gathered in my eyes.
“You will get through this. We will find a way around it. Please don’t panic calm down,” I said, trying to steady my own voice.
“I’ve never heard of such a tradition before. What kind of man would allow his wife to be touched by a deity? What kind of deity is that? I won’t do it, I won’t. But what do I do? I love my husband, and I can’t afford to be a divorcee this early, Stella I'm finished” she cried.
“Sis, you are not finished, we will find a way out. First, I think you should inform Papa and Mama let them know what’s going on. This is a bārbaric tradition and should not be condoned,” I replied.
She shook her head slowly.
“Going home this early in my marriage… do you think that’s a good idea? What will people say?” she asked.
“Sis, this is where people get it wrong. You’re thinking about what people will say while you’re suffering. People will always talk. If you are in a situation you don’t like, especially one that is dangerous, the only thing that should matter is how to get out, not what people will say,” I said.
“Stella, you don’t understand if I go back now, people will say my marriage has problems,” she replied.
“Sis, people will always talk. That’s what mouths are for. But will their talk change your identity? No. In fact, most people who talk are hiding worse situations in their own lives,” I said.
She went quiet.
“So what do you suggest I do? My husband said we will be traveling to their village this weekend. We were supposed to go earlier, but his trip delayed it. Stella… I can’t do this,” she said, almost whispering.
“You won’t. First, we inform Papa and Mama. Let’s hear their opinion, then we decide the next step. Honestly, this is a lesson, I will always ask about traditions before anything serious,” I said.
“Yes… I made a mistake. We never discussed anything like this while dating. It didn’t even cross my mind,” she said.
“It’s not your fault, your husband should have told you. It’s his responsibility,” I replied.
She kept crying, and honestly… I didn’t know how to fix something this heavy.
Later that night, after everyone retired to their rooms, I quietly tiptoed to their door. I knew my sister… she wouldn’t let this matter rest.
“Why did you hide this from me, CJ? How could you keep something this serious from me?” she demanded añgrily.
“Babe, please calm down, I didn’t hide it intentionally we never discussed traditions, and it slipped my mind,” he said.
“Slipped your mind? Something this bārbaric? So after my wedding, instead of being with my husband, I should go and sleep with a deity? Never!” she cried.
“Please, my love this is to bless our union. Even my brother’s wife did it, and they are fine,” he pleaded.
Listening to them, I felt my chest tighten.
“What kind of tradition is this…?” I whispered to myself.
“Babe, please say something your silence is
k!11ing me. I really want to hold you, I’m yearning for you as well, but please… let’s travel this weekend and get this done with. I promise I will make it up to you. Please, my love…” CJ said, his voice shaking.
“I’m pained, I’m broken, I’m hūrting seriously. I need to go see my parents tomorrow…” my sister began, her voice trémbling.
“Babe! No, please!” CJ rushed his words, almost panicking. “If you inform your family, they will never allow you to do it. In fact, they will take you away from me. Oma, I’m on my knees… please, let’s deal with this together. I promise I will cherish you till my last day on earth. Please don’t tell your family, they will not approve of it…” he said, breaking down completely.
I stood there, frozen.
“CJ, what if something goes wrong?” my sister shot back, her voice now firm despite the tears. “What will you tell my family? I have to inform them. I can’t embark on this kind of journey without telling them. You mentioned Bro Godswill’s wife… well, I’m not her and I’m not promising you that I will continue with this marriage, because I cannot bring myself to sleep with a dëity. Never.”
Her words hit hard.
“Babe, I’m very sorry to put you through all of this,” CJ said, almost whispering now. “Please, I don’t want to lose you. Let’s agree and deal with this just once as a couple. I can’t do this life alone without you. Please don’t leave me… and don’t allow this come between us. My love, please…” he pleaded, his voice heavy with fear.
At that point, my chest tightened.
I could feel his desperation and my sister’s pain my body became weak, how would they survive this?
And deep down, I knew one thing my parents would never allow this.
“I really don’t want my sister to go through this…” I whispered, almost inaudibly.
“CJ… please stand up,” my sister said softly after a long silence. “Let me sleep over it tonight. Tomorrow, when you return from work, I will tell you my decision. Go and rest… you need it. You’ve had a long day.”
“Thank you, babe…” CJ breathed out in relief. “This means a lot to me. I love you so much. See you in the morning… I can’t wait for us to finally be together as husband and wife.”
“I love you too rest well,” she replied quietly.
The moment I heard that, I quickly tiptoed back to my room my heart was racing seriously.
What kind of tradition is this?
What exactly have they dragged my sister into?
The next morning, I intentionally came downstairs late just to give them space.
When I heard the sound of my brother-in-law’s car driving out, I stepped out and acted like I knew nothing.
“Good morning, Sis, how was your...” I stopped mid-sentence.
Her eyes were swollen, red and heavy.
“Sis… did you even sleep at all or you cried all through the night?” I asked, moving closer to her.
She looked at me and that look alone broke me.
“Stella… I think I will do it,” she said slowly. “If that’s what it takes to keep my marriage, then I will do it.”
“What?” I almost shouted.
“Sis, have you really thought this through? Are you sure? This isn’t something you decide like that… what if you regret it later?” I asked, my voice filled with worry.
“I don’t have any other way out,” she replied, shaking her head. “I love my husband and I want to remain married to him. Since we are in this together… I will do it.”
Tears rolled down her cheeks again.
I didn’t even think twice I pulled her into a tight hug.
“Sis… I’m here, I’m with you every step of the way,” I said softly. “But please make sure this decision is coming from your heart, not from pressure. Please stop crying we just need to understand how this thing is even done first.”
She sniffed and nodded slightly.
“My husband said they will explain everything when we get to his village,” she said.
“Have you told him your decision yet?” I asked.
“No… I told him I’ll tell him when he returns today. And once I do… we will travel this weekend,” she replied.
I exhaled slowly.
“Hmmm… this deity… how does it even work?” I said, frowning. “Won’t something like this cause an infection? I thought deities are invisible. Why is this one after new brides like this?”
She looked at me and shook her head faintly.
“Don’t say what you don’t understand. Let’s get there first. It might not even be what we are thinking maybe it’s something else entirely,” she said.
“Hmmm…” I muttered. “I just pray so. Whatever it is… just make sure you are doing it willingly.”
“Thank you, Stella,” she said, hugging me again. “You make things easier for me, I can’t love you less. Even though you are stubborn sometimes.”
I smiled faintly.
“I love you too, Sis. Don’t worry, everything will be fine. This too shall pass. Let’s just wait till we get there and hear exactly what this so-called tradition is about.”
“As long as you are with me, I know I will get through this,” she said.
Then she wiped her face slightly.
“Come… let’s eat.”
That one brought small life back into me.
“Yes o! How did you know my stomach is already crying? Abeg, make we eat before I faint here,” I said, trying to lighten the mood.
For the first time since morning she smiled a little.
