Don’t stop at WHAT happened.

Imagine your report shows that revenue dropped by 20% this month. A beginner might simply report, “Revenue decreased by 20%.” But an analyst knows that this is only the starting point.

Ask yourself: What exactly dropped?
Was it the total number of customers, number of orders, average order value, a particular product, or sales from a specific region?
Then break the numbers down. Maybe customers only dropped by 5%, but the average amount spent by each customer dropped significantly.

That tells you the problem may not be about losing customers it may be about customers spending less.
Next, identify where the biggest change occurred.

Perhaps most products performed normally, but one major product experienced a 45% decline. Now you have a stronger direction for your investigation.

Don't forget to compare the current results with previous months or the same period last year. A decline might look alarming until you discover that the same decline happens every year during that particular period.

The goal isn't just to tell people what happened. It's to understand what is behind the number.

That is how you think like an analyst: don't stop at the first answer. Keep asking questions until the data starts telling you the full story.

What's your biggest struggle right now❓
Is it learning, practising, building projects, or finding opportunities.
Let's shed more light on this in the comment section.

Still on think like an analyst.

You receive a dataset with 100,000 rows. What's the FIRST thing you do?
🔘 Start analysing immediately
🔘 Check the data quality
🔘 Create a dashboard
🔘 Look for patterns

Nobody told him that learning Excel wouldn't automatically make him good at data analysis.

When he first decided to learn data analytics, he thought he had figured out the formula.
Learn Excel → master formulas → learn a few more tools → become a good analyst.

So he started learning.
He learned formulas.
He learned pivotTables,charts and shortcuts.
And with every new thing he learned, he became more confident.

Until one day, he was given a real dataset and asked:
“What can you tell me from this data?”
That question caught him off guard.
He knew how to work with the spreadsheet.
But he didn't know where to start the analysis.
He could create charts, but he wasn't sure which questions those charts should answer.
He could calculate numbers, but he couldn't explain what those numbers meant for the business.
That's when he realized something important:

Knowing Excel and knowing how to analyze data are two different things.
✔️Excel was the tool.
But data analysis required him to understand the problem behind the data.
✔️He had to learn how to ask better questions.
✔️He had to understand the context.
✔️He had to identify patterns.
✔️He had to separate meaningful findings from things that were simply interesting.
✔️And he had to learn how to turn those findings into useful insights.
That experience changed how he approached learning.
Instead of constantly asking:
“What new Excel feature should I learn?”
He started asking:
“What problem can I solve with the skills I already have?”
And that's when his learning became different.
He stopped trying to simply collect skills.
He started trying to apply them.
Because being good at Excel doesn't automatically make someone a good data analyst.
Just like knowing how to use a camera doesn't automatically make someone a great photographer.
The tool matters but knowing what to do with the tool matters even more.

The goal isn't just to learn the tools. The goal is to learn how to think with data.
