Misconception About My Business Clarity Versus Ego
After running PCV cleaning business for about two years, I made the strategic decision to withdraw from actively servicing certain locations in Lagos State.
Many misinterpreted this move as ego.
But it was not ego; it was clarity and focus.
This decision was rooted in my firm understanding of our business model, our vision, and the specific clients we aim to serve long-term.
From the beginning, I knew our
future target clients and the standards our brand must uphold.
In those areas, conversations consistently centred on price, with little regard for the real costs of running a sustainable, professional cleaning business.
After providing quotations, I regularly received comments like:
- "That is too expensive for me.”
- "What exactly are you cleaning?”
- "My budget is this.”
- "Is it not just broom and soap?”
- I have someone who will do it for a lower price sef”
I established an explicit policy:
“We do not routinely service these areas unless clients genuinely value professional service and recognise its worth.”
The issue was never related to the jobs being below our level.
The core reason was that the numbers simply did not add up.
In some cases, transportation costs from our office to the client’s location already surpassed what the client was willing to pay. After expenses, profit margins could be as slim as ₦10,000–₦15,000, which wasn't our calling. If we continue with that, I doubt if we can have an outlet abroad.
One of the most valuable lessons entrepreneurship has taught me is this:
You cannot serve everyone and still achieve meaningful growth.
Growth demands focus.
Some cleaning companies may choose to specialise in those areas and markets and develop profitable systems around them, and there is nothing wrong with that.
But that was not the PCV dream.
People often say:
“You need to sachetise your business so more people can afford it.”
I understand the logic.
However, I am committed to building a business known for quality, value, structure, profitability, and premium service rather than remaining endlessly busy with little tangible results.
Not every opportunity is the right opportunity.
Growth requires the discipline to say “no” to distractions so you can confidently say “yes” to what truly supports your vision.
