________________________________________
Dr. 🅱️: Good morning, Mr. A. How are you today?
Mr. 🅰️: I'm fine, Dr. B. What can I do for you today?
Dr. 🅱️: I need info regarding certain health indicators in Ekiti State.
Mr. 🅰️: Really?
Dr. 🅱️: Yes, Mr. A. I am serious. I need to write reports about them.
Mr. 🅰️: You are in luck then. I recently did a consultancy job in December 2024 with GIZ for the Ekiti State Ministry of Health and Human Services’ 2025 Annual Operational Plans.
Dr. 🅱️: Seriously? How did you get the work?
Mr. 🅰️: Yes now. The Honourable Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, recommended me. I no fit lie give you nau, Dr. B.
Dr. 🅱️: I'm sure you were well-paid. 😋
Mr. 🅰️: Okay, okay, let's face why you're here, Dr. 🅱️...😐
Dr. 🅱️: Alright sir. 😁
Mr. 🅰️: So one of the tasks I undertook during the consultancy was to write a narrative for the AOP, and while doing this, I was able to come across some impressive improvement in the Ekiti State key health indicators in the last few years.
Dr. 🅱️: Wow! Kindly let me know them, please. 🙏
Mr. 🅰️: All the data were obtained from the District Health Information Software 2 (DHIS2), Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), and Maternal and Perinatal Death Surveillance and Response (MPDSR), and they are very legit.
Dr. 🅱️: No problem, sir.
Mr. 🅰️: So, the first one is maternal mortality, which is the death of a pregnant woman from complications during or after (up to six weeks) pregnancy and childbirth. It was initially 572 deaths in 100,000 live births in 2020 and is now 123 deaths in 100,000 live births in 2024.
Dr. 🅱️: Wow.
Mr. 🅰️: Another one is neonatal mortality—the number of babies who die within the first 28 days of life. The number fell from 42 deaths in 1,000 live births in 2018 to 15 deaths in 1,000 live births in 2024.
Dr. 🅱️: Damn!
Mr. 🅰️: We also have post-neonatal mortality, which is the number of deaths that occur in children between the ages of 29 and 364 days. It was 15 deaths in 1,000 live births in 2018, but it is 8 deaths in 1,000 live births in 2024.
Dr. 🅱️: That's impressive!
Mr. 🅰️: Yes, it is. There is also infant mortality, the number of deaths of infants under 1 year of age. It is now 27 deaths in 1,000 live births, a huge reduction from 57 deaths in 1000 live births in 2018.
Dr. 🅱️: The difference is huge indeed!
Mr. 🅰️: Surely. Under-5 mortality had been a source of worry for us as well in the past. It is the number of children who die before their fifth birthday. The ratio was initially 95 deaths in 1,000 live births in Ekiti in 2018, but has now been reduced to 44 deaths in 1,000 live births in 2024.
Dr. 🅱️: That's one of the health indicators I'm interested in! How is it different from what is called child mortality rate?
Mr. 🅰️: That's easy. In child mortality, it is the number of deaths of children from age 0 to 14, unlike U5M, which is 0 to 5 years old. Child mortality rate is now 18 deaths in 1000 live births, up from the initial 40 deaths in 1000 live births in 2018.
Dr. 🅱️: That makes more sense. Thank you so much, Mr. A. Any other indices that I should know of?
Mr. 🅰️: Definitely. The percentage of children 12-23 months who received all basic vaccination, which was 41.1% in 2028, is now 56.6% in 2024. Also, the proportion of under-5 children that are stunted, mainly due to malnutrition, was 20.8% in 2018 and has also reduced to 17.1% in 2024.
Dr. 🅱️: Wow. Thanks so much, Mr. A. I appreciate you a lot.
Mr. 🅰️: And before I leave you, here is a piece of indicator that you will like above all personally.
Dr. 🅱️: Oh really? Let's have it. Let's have it.
Mr. 🅰️: Modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR), which is the proportion of women of reproductive age (15–49) who use modern contraceptive methods, rose from 25.4% in 2018 to 42.8% in 2024. So more women aren't going to bother you with unwanted pregnancy these days, Dr. B.
Dr. 🅱️: I have no idea what you're talking about, Mr. A. 😒
Mr. 🅰️: Dr. Beeeee! I know you know that I know you. The streets are safer now. You can play more freely. Just be careful of HIV even though the prevalence rate in the state is still low at 0.7%. Sha be careful.
Dr. 🅱️: I still don't know what you're saying, sir. Thank you for what you gave me. I should leave.
Mr. 🅰️: Dr. Beeeeeee! Stop walking away quickly. Let me give you more indicators.
Dr. 🅱️: You have given me enough. Leave me alone, Mr. A.
Mr. 🅰️: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
