*The Solemnity of All Saints*

The earliest certain observance of a feast in honor of all the saints is an early fourth-century commemoration of “all the martyrs.” In the early seventh century, after successive waves of invaders plundered the catacombs, Pope Boniface IV gathered up some 28 wagon-loads of bones and reinterred them beneath the Pantheon, a Roman temple dedicated to all the gods. The pope rededicated the shrine as a Christian church. According to Venerable Bede, the pope intended “that the memory of all the saints might in the future be honored in the place which had formerly been dedicated to the worship not of gods but of demons” (On the Calculation of Time).

But the rededication of the Pantheon, like the earlier commemoration of all the martyrs, occurred in May. Many Eastern Churches still honor all the saints in the spring, either during the Easter season or immediately after Pentecost.

How the Western Church came to celebrate this feast, now recognized as a solemnity, in November is a puzzle to historians. The Anglo-Saxon theologian Alcuin observed the feast on November 1 in 800, as did his friend Arno, Bishop of Salzburg. Rome finally adopted that date in the ninth century.

📍Why Mary Is Called, "Tower of Ivory"

This phrase is derived from the biblical description of the beloved's neck in the songs of Solomon which says, "Your neck is like an ivory tower." (Songs of Solon 7:4). In this context, the "Tower of Ivory" is a symbol of beauty and purity.

As devotees of our Lady, we take cues from this biblical verse to emphasize the strength and beauty of our Lady. The tower in biblical times was the citadel, the fortress, constructed atop a hill as the last stronghold of safety (Refer to the title, "Tower of David" page 👉🏻 Catholic Matters post on (15/10/2025)

Ivory as a material is a hard, white and valuable substance that comes from the tusks of certain animals, such as elephants, walruses and mammoths. It is the opaque and dentine of the elephant commonly known as tusk. As an ornament and decorative material, ivory has been extensively used by the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Romans, etc. Solomon made a great ivory throne (2 Chronicles 9:17) and Ahab built an Ivory House (1 kings 22:39). Being the product of the tusks of the elephant, ivory is a symbol of strength. Just as the horns of the bulls of Bashan are the sign of their strength, so the tusks of the elephant are its strength. That it is also precious, ornamental and decorative enhances it'ys symbolism as Greatness, Beauty and Power.

As an ornament, ivory is something that adorns and beautifies; for a person, "it is regarded as a source of honour and credit." Our Lady is engraved with cardinal virtues and studded with the gifts of the spirit (Gal 5:22). She is the finest ornament that adorns the celestial courts. As personified in the Ivory Tower, she is "our human nature's solitary boasts."

"A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars." (Rev. 12:1).

LET US PRAY
O Mary, my mother, how proud I feel when I speak of thee. You are my "Tower of Ivory", my tower of beauty. For you fill the highest place, next to the heavens imperial throne. Obtain for us each saving grace and make our wants thine own. Amen

Holy Mary, Mother of God, we honor you today as
the model of perfect purity. Your body, soul, mind,
and heart were completely oriented toward God.
Help us to imitate your purity in our own lives.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, so pure and free from
sin, pray for us who struggle with temptation. When
the world tries to corrupt our hearts, shelter us in
your mantle and keep us close to your Son.
Mother Most Pure, teach us the beauty of chastity.
In a world that has forgotten the value of purity,
help us to be witnesses to its power and freedom.
Our Lady of the Rosary, we take up this powerful
weapon against evil. Through the Rosary, purify
our hearts, protect us from sin, and lead us deeper
into the mysteries of your Son's life.
For young people struggling to live purely in an
impure world, we ask your motherly protection and
guidance. Show them that purity is not weakness
but strength, not repression but freedom.
For those who have lost their purity, be a mother of
mercy. Lead them to your Son's forgiveness and
help them to begin again For families, that they might create homes where
purity is valued, protected, and lived.
Virgin Most Pure, Spouse of the Holy Spirit, help
us to prepare our hearts as dwelling places for God,
as you prepared yours. May our bodies, like yours,
be temples of the Holy Spirit, honored and kept holy
for God's glory. Amen.

St. Peter’s Square the Holy Mass and canonizations celebrated by Pope Leo XIV of Saint Carlo Acutis and Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati in Rome.

Carlo Acutis (1991–2006): a teenager from Milan, passionate about computer science, he used new media to spread the faith and love for the Eucharist. Beatified in 2020, he is a model of digital evangelization.

Pier Giorgio Frassati (1901–1925): a young man from Turin, sportsman and mountain enthusiast, he stood out for his charity towards the poor and his joyful witness to the Gospel. Beatified in 1990, he is the patron of young people and students.

Thousands of faithful have gathered at St. Peter’s Square for the canonization of Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati.
