The Sacred New Yam Ritual of Ekwulọbịa People in Aguata LGA*

In Ekwulọbịa, one of the major communities in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, the arrival of new yam is not just about farming. It is a spiritual and cultural event.

Every year, before any farmer can display new yam in Ekwulọbịa main market, or before any household can taste the new harvest, the community must first perform the traditional rites.

Led by the elders, ndi ichie, and traditional priests, the ritual involves offering kolanut, palm wine, and the first tubers of yam to the gods of the land and ancestors. Prayers are said for bumper harvest, peace, and protection from hunger and disease.

This act signifies gratitude and acknowledges that the land and its fruits belong to the gods first.

When the rites are completed, the Igwe or traditional ruler officially declares "Iri Ji Ohuuru" open. Only then do yam sellers bring their produce to the market, and families begin cooking the new yam.

To the people of Ekwulọbịa, this ritual preserves identity. It teaches younger generations that prosperity comes with thanksgiving, and that culture must be kept alive even in modern times.
