Can Venture Capital Transform the South East?

Editor’s note: Dr. Nelson Omenugha, takes a look at the venture capital programme of the South East Development Commission and outlines six “strategic pillars” to maximize the programme. Venture capital is not an end in itself; therefore, the Commission must leverage “an integrated ecosystem” to drive both business success and sustained progress in the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

The launch of the South East Venture Capital Programme (SEVCP) is an encouraging economic empowerment and development initiative. By deploying investment capital to high-potential startups, the programme has proven that right partnerships and drive can unlock innovation and attract investment to the South East.

I must thank Mr Mark Okoye and the team at the South East Development Commission for the depth of planning, stakeholder mobilization, strategic partnerships, and resource commitment that made this initiative possible. I appreciate the efforts being committed to position the South East for economic competitiveness. More importantly, I’m thrilled by the deliberate focus on empowering young entrepreneurs whose ideas, energy, and enterprise will shape the future of our regional economy.

It’s important we appreciate that venture capital is a starting point and not the destination. Within this context, SEDC must guarantee programme sustainability roadmap as the true measure of programme success will not be the number of startups funded today, but the number of sustainable businesses built, jobs created, industries strengthened, exports made, and wealth generated “tomorrow”.

This is particularly important because evidence consistently shows that access to finance alone does not guarantee economic transformation. Across Nigeria, MSMEs contribute over 46% of GDP, account for nearly 97% of businesses, and provide almost 88% of employment, yet many continue to struggle due to infrastructure deficits, limited market access, skills gaps, regulatory constraints, and inadequate institutional support. Global evidence is also clear. The world’s leading innovation ecosystems were built not merely on capital, but on an integrated ecosystem consisting of infrastructure, skill, research, market access, supportive policy, and long-term institutional commitment. Its same experience from Silicon Valley in the United States to Bangalore in India and Shenzhen in China.

If SEVCP is to become a sustainable engine of regional prosperity, the next phase must focus on six strategic pillars.

1. Build Regional Innovation Infrastructure: Every South East state should host (whether in form of partnership) modern innovation hubs, technology parks, fabrication laboratories, digital skills centres, and entrepreneurship incubators linked through a coordinated regional innovation network. Innovation does not scale in isolation. It scales through ecosystems.

The South East already possesses a strong entrepreneurial culture. What is required is the infrastructure that allows ideas to move from concept to commercialization.

1. Commercialize Research from Universities: The South East is home to some of Nigeria's strongest universities and research institutions. Yet a significant proportion of academic research never reaches the marketplace.

SEDC should establish University-Industry Commercialization Centres to facilitate patent development, technology transfer, startup formation, and industrial partnerships.

The future economic leaders of the region may already be sitting inside our laboratories and lecture halls. We must create pathways that connect knowledge to enterprise.

1. Expand Access Beyond the First Cohort: The twenty-five startups that received funding deserve recognition, but they represent only a fraction of the entrepreneurial potential within the region.

A sustainable pipeline should include:
i. Startup acceleration programmes
ii. Entrepreneurship academies
iii. Innovation grants
iv. Business incubation platforms
v. Export readiness programmes
vi. Early-stage angel investment networks

Nigeria has over 39 million MSMEs, and small businesses remain the largest source of employment in the economy. Expanding the pipeline of investment-ready businesses should therefore become a regional priority. (data.devbankng.com)

1. Unlock Diaspora Capital and Expertise: The South East diaspora remains one of our greatest untapped economic assets. Across North America, Europe, Asia, and other parts of Africa, Ndi Igbo occupy strategic positions in business, technology, healthcare, academia, manufacturing, and finance.

SEDC should establish a South East Diaspora Investment and Innovation Platform capable of mobilizing:
i. Investment capital
ii. Mentorship networks
iii. Technical expertise
iv. Technology transfer
v. Market access opportunities

I’m aware that the Commission has already initiated conversations and calls around mentorship and partnerships. The next step is building institutional mechanisms that convert goodwill into measurable economic outcomes.

1. Create Sector-Specific Investment Funds: Future investment vehicles should target sectors where the South East possesses clear comparative advantages:
i. Manufacturing
ii. Agribusiness
iii. Healthcare and Education
iv. Technology
v. Renewable Energy
vi. Creative Industries
vii. Logistics and Trade
viii. Industrial Clusters

This approach will deepen value chains, improve productivity, strengthen exports, and accelerate industrialization.

Particularly in manufacturing and agro-processing, the South East can become a major production hub serving both domestic and regional markets.

1. Institutionalize Measurement and Accountability: What gets measured gets improved. SEDC should publish annual scorecards tracking:
i. Jobs created
ii. Startups scaled
iii. Investments attracted
iv. Patents commercialized
v. Export earnings generated
vi. SMEs supported
vii. Industrial output growth
viii. Youth participation rates
ix. Diaspora investments mobilized

Transparent measurement will help build investor confidence, strengthen public trust, and ensure continuous improvement.

The Bigger Opportunity:
The South East has never lacked talent. What it has historically lacked is coordinated institutional support, patient capital, enabling infrastructure, and long-term economic planning.

The launch of SEVCP is therefore more than a funding programme; for me, it is an opportunity to lay the foundation for a new regional economic model.

Nigeria's startup ecosystem is now among the strongest in Africa, with over 1,400 active startups and continued growth in innovation-driven enterprises. Yet the regions that will thrive in the coming decades are not necessarily those with the most entrepreneurs, but those with the strongest ecosystems to support them. (startupblink.com)

If SEDC successfully combines venture capital with infrastructure development, industrial policy, research commercialization, diaspora engagement, and skill development, it can build far more than startups. It can build globally competitive industries. It can create thousands of quality jobs and empower our young people. It can expand exports. It can attract investment at scale. And ultimately, it can position the South East as Nigeria's foremost hub for innovation, enterprise, and inclusive economic growth.

The challenge before us is no longer proving that entrepreneurs exist.
The challenge is creating an ecosystem where innovation can scale, industries can emerge, businesses can thrive, and prosperity can be shared across the region. That is the next frontier.

And that is the agenda the South East Development Commission must now pursue.

Today, I attended the meeting of Umuru Nnobi Youths, where I deepened the Solution message, amplifying the grand vision of Mr Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR towards a Greater Anambra.

It was refreshing to see how the transformative impact of our government is touching lives at the grassroot — from free, quality nursery and secondary education, to free antenatal and delivery services, youth training and empowerment programs, and massive road infrastructure development.

Our young people are not just beneficiaries — they are witnesses and ambassadors of this progress. Their resounding applause and strong assurance of support for Governor Soludo’s reelection reaffirm our shared vision for a greater Anambra.

On Saturday, September 6, I chaired the Day of the Holy Child Association and Young Missionary Movement of Nigeria (YOMM) in the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia - CADEK. The event, organized by the Diocesan Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS), was themed: “We Are Missionaries.”

The event was not just a gathering — it was an encounter. It was a beautiful opportunity for our children and young people to deepen interaction with His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Okpalaeke, and the guests. The joy, enthusiasm, and depth of faith displayed by the children and young people were truly refreshing.

We used the occasion to celebrate the missionary spirit in our children, and encourage them to embrace their roles as ambassadors of Christ and of their families wherever they may go. Their voices, their questions, their hopes —they all reflect the vibrant future of our Church.

My heartfelt appreciation goes to His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Okpalaeke, for his continued fatherly guidance and spirited commitment to nurturing the spiritual and moral foundation of our children. His presence and words remain a source of inspiration for all.

To the Director Rev Fr Ofess Chibuike Festus Okoye, coordinators, parents, catechists, and our children and young missionaries — thank you for making the day such a memorable one. Your energy, your songs, your march-past, your prayers, and your faith light up the day.

Let us continue to pray for our children and youth, that they may grow in faith, wisdom, and courage to stand firm as true missionaries in today’s world.

On Tuesday, 2nd September 2025, I honoured the invitation of our Grandfather in Faith, His Eminence Francis Cardinal Arinze, to a private Mass with members of The Tuesday Catholic Prayer Group, Onitsha, in commemoration of his 60th Episcopal Anniversary (29th August 1965 – 29th August 2025) at Holy Spirit Parish, Omagba, Onitsha.

To stand beside a man whose life has been a testament of faith, discipline, humility, and service to God and the Church is nothing short of inspiring. Cardinal Arinze is not just a towering figure in the global Catholic Church — he holds a very special place in my life and family.

In an age where noise often drowns truth, and conviction is rare, Cardinal Arinze continues to embody the very essence of spiritual clarity, courage, and authenticity. Spending time with him is not just refreshing — it is deeply nourishing to the soul.

Congratulations, Your Eminence, The Prince of the Church, on your Diamond Jubilee. Thank you for your witness. You have run the race with honor, and generations will rise to call you blessed.

Earlier today, I hosted members and stakeholders of APGA, Nnobi Ward 1, to a strategic meeting focused on deepening grassroots mobilization for the re-election of our dear Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR.

With enthusiasm and unity, ward leaders, polling unit coordinators, and party faithful reviewed our electoral roadmap and reaffirmed commitment to APGA’s victory. Our stakeholders also took turn to applaud the giant strides of our great party, APGA under the leadership of Mr Governor, including the free antenatal and delivery services; free qualitative nursery and secondary education in all public schools; youth employment, training and empowerment; extensive road construction and rehabilitation; among others.

Let’s be clear: Governor Soludo’s reelection is not just a mandate - it’s a message of trust in progress, continuity, and bold leadership. Nnobi Ward 1 is SOLUDO-fied! APGA is unstoppable.

Earlier today in Awka, I had the distinct honor of hosting and taking a tour with a contingent of the Young Missionary Movement of Nigeria (YMMN), Pontifical Mission Societies, who are currently on their Provincial Congress.

This year’s congress, themed “We Are Missionaries of Hope”, has been ongoing since the 27th of August, 2025, at Holy Child Secondary School, Isuofia, with the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia hosting the Archdiocesean members.

It was a refreshing and hopeful encounter — a convergence of youthful energy, missionary zeal, and a deep yearning to live out the Catholic faith in today’s ever-evolving digital world. I had the privilege of sharing some reflections and lifelong experiences with them — insights I believe are vital in guiding their journey of faith in this digital age.

We discussed the unique opportunities and challenges that come with proclaiming the Gospel in a hyperconnected world: How to remain rooted in truth while navigating social media, How to evangelize with compassion across digital platforms, and How to be authentic witnesses of hope in times of confusion and noise.

Seeing their enthusiasm and commitment to mission filled me with a renewed sense of hope for the future of our Church. These young missionaries are not just the leaders of tomorrow — they are the witnesses of today.

May the fire lit during this congress continue to burn brightly in their hearts, and may they go forth as true ambassadors of Christ, bringing His hope to every corner of the world, both online and offline. Amen.

Yesterday, August 28, I attended the burial of my dear brother, the young and promising Martin Onyekesi, fondly known as Fish Magnet, at Ikenga community. It was a deeply emotional moment, saying goodbye to a life full of potential that ended far too soon. May his soul find rest in the Lord. Amen.

Honored with the Anambra State NUJ Youth Mentor of the Year 2025 Award.

Yesterday, August 28, at the Anambra State NUJ Press Week held at the International Convention Center, Awka, I was honored to receive the Anambra State NUJ Youth Mentor of the Year 2025 award.

This recognition is not only a personal milestone, but a celebration of the shared vision and modest efforts we make towards youth development. Particularly, it speaks to what is possible when youth mentorship is taken seriously — when we invest in the young people, believe in their dreams, and support them with action, not just words.

Thank You, Anambra State NUJ leadership - ably led by Comrade Dr Odogwu Emeka Odogwu - and the selection committee. For me, this award is not as a reward, but as a call to do more — to deepen the impact, broaden the reach, and stay committed to youth transformation.

To my principal and Mr Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR, thank you for your spirited commitment to youth empowerment and inclusive governance. Your leadership continues to inspire those of us privileged to serve under your vision.
