Fertigation Process Part 2 continued
A simplified guide to water-soluble NPK ratios for fertigation at different crop stages.
Best NPK Ratios by Crop Stage
1. Vegetative Stage / Early Growth
Ratio: 20-10-10 or 19-19-19 + TE
High Nitrogen = leaf & stem growth, dark green leaves.
Use for: Seedling stage, after transplanting, maize at 2-6 weeks, leafy veg like cabbage/lettuce.
2. Flowering / Fruit Set Stage
Ratio: 15-15-30 or 12-12-36 + TE
High Potassium + moderate P = more flowers, better fruit set, less flower drop.
Use for: Tomatoes, pepper, onions, mango/citrus when buds appear.
3. Fruiting / Bulb/Tuber Filling Stage
Ratio: 10-10-30 or 5-15-45 + TE
Very high Potassium = bigger fruits, better size, taste, shelf life.
Use for: Tomato/pepper fruit filling, potato/onion bulbing, maize grain filling.
4. Root Development / Seedling Starter
Ratio: 12-40-12 or 10-52-10 + TE
High Phosphorus = strong roots, good transplant establishment.
Use for: First 2 weeks after transplanting, nursery stage.
TE = Trace Elements like Mg, Zn, B, Fe. Crops need them too.
3 Quick Fertigation Tips
1. pH matters: Keep irrigation water pH 5.5-6.5. High pH = clogged drippers + poor nutrient uptake.
2. Don’t mix everything: Calcium-based fertilizers can’t mix with Sulfate/Phosphate types in same tank. Causes clogging.
3. Flush system: Run clean water 10-15min after fertigation to prevent salt buildup in drippers.
Bottom line: Start high N for leaves → switch to high P for roots/flowers → finish high K for yield & quality.
