We are all sailboats on the sea of life, and MONEY is the wind”
I think this page is more than just a business page right now.
Anyways don’t click ‘like’ until you hear me out. The above quote isn’t really mine.
This is a lesson in POWER AND PERSUASION.
===========
On an episode of the hit show Game of Thrones, Lord Varys (a wise man) was bringing Tyrion Lannister (the newly appointed ‘Prime Minister’) up to speed on the power dynamics of the Kingdom.
He told him the following riddle. I'll quote the version from the book just to provide more clarity.
“In a room sit 3 great men, a king, a priest, and a rich man with his gold. Between them stands a sellsword (assassin), a little man of common birth and no great mind.
Each of the great ones bids him slay the other two.
‘Do it,’ says the king, ‘for I am your lawful ruler.’
‘Do it,’ says the priest, ‘for I command you in the names of the gods.’
‘Do it,’ says the rich man, ‘and all this gold shall be yours.’
So tell me – who lives and who dies?”
As with all good riddles, one must look beyond the obvious in search of its solution.
The riddle has no direct answer.
To answer it accurately, we must first investigate this assassin’s model of the world.
What drives him?
What motivates him?
More sinisterly, what CONTROLS him?
If it is power, the king wins.
If it is religion, the priest wins.
If it is money, the rich man wins.
If however, you answered the above riddle speedily, you’ve only provided me a clue on what your subconscious driver is, the means by which you can be most effectively persuaded - Power, Religion or Money.
When trying to persuade and/or gain the cooperation of others, spend more resources first investigating their drivers. Reframe your argument accordingly and then make a powerful case.
Back to my first statement “We are all sailboats on the sea of life, and MONEY is the wind”.
Is money really the wind?
IT DOESN’T MATTER.
All that matters is that if I were to have said that in a speech to people who love money, I would’ve gotten a thunderous round of applause and whispers of “Hmmm... Deep!”
To church folk I would say, “We are all sailboats on the sea of life, and GOD is the wind”
To academia, “We are all sailboats on the sea of life, and KNOWLEDGE is the wind”
To the elderly, “We are all sailboats on the sea of life, and EXPERIENCE is the wind”
If I were contesting a Presidential election, “This great nation is a sailboat on the sea of life, and YOU THE PEOPLE are the wind”
A CEO seeking to motivate employees would say, “This organization is nothing but a sailboat on the sea of life, and YOU MY PEOPLE are the wind”
In proposing marriage to a woman, a man could reframe it as, “I am nothing but a sailboat on the sea of life, and darling, YOU are the wind”
To feminists you can say, “We men are just sailboats on the sea of life, but WOMEN are the wind”
========
So what is the true wind that moves all sailboats along this sea of life? This I do not know. This is merely a lesson in Power and Persuasion.
However, I can say this - This Facebook Community is nothing but a sailboat on the sea of Social Media, but ( I don't know what to put here)
